The city of Lugo is a lesser-visited destination for non-Spanish tourists in Spain, but I think it deserves more attention. It preserves major remains of its Roman past (when it was 'Lucus Augusti'), among them this ancient wall (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO). It is a city of quiet pedestrian streets, wide squares and spacious gardens, and the historic quarter boasts some of the best restaurants in Galicia for sampling excellent fresh meats, shellfish and fish (Lugo is well-known for its gastronomy). City highlights are easy to visit on foot and include: Church of San Francisco Lugo Regional Museum Lugo city walls Roman baths Los Seminarios Lugo Cathedral Praza do Campo Archaeological Centre of San Roque It also hosts some great festivals: Early June: the Arde Lucus Festival relives the founding of the city of Lugo by recreating its Roman past. Lugo returns to being Lucus Augusti for 3/4 days, when it was an important city in Roman Gallaecia. The city wall and Praza Maior square play an important role in this festival, as they are the ideal setting for travelling back in time to the 1st century. The citizens take to the streets dressed as Romans. This festival has been declared of National Tourist Interest, and it always gets some attention on the national nightly news. Early October: the Fiestas of San Froilán is a celebration attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. A religious ceremonies are held in honour of the patron saint Froilán and and the following Sunday “O Domingo das Mozas” is a celebration of the traditional costume, culture and customs of Galicia. The city fills with cabezudo figures, wandering music bands, street markets, magic shows...

Roman Walls of Lugo, a city in the Autonomous Region of Galicia in north-western Spain, are an exceptional architectural, archaeological and constructive legacy of Roman engineering, dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. The Walls are built of internal and external stone facings of slate with some granite, with a core filling of a conglomerate of slate slabs and worked stone pieces from Roman buildings, interlocked with lime mortar.
Their total length of 2117 m in the shape of an oblong rectangle occupies an area of 1.68 ha. Their height varies between 8 and 10 m, with a width of 4.2 m, reaching 7 m in some specific points. The walls still contain 85 external towers, 10 gates (five of which are original and five that were opened in modern times), four staircases and two ramps providing access to the walkway along the top of the walls, one of which is internal and the other external. Each tower contained access stairs leading from the intervallum to the wall walk of town wall, of which a total of 21 have been discovered to date.
The defences of Lugo are the most complete and best preserved example of Roman military architecture in the Western Roman Empire.
Despite the renovation work carried out, the walls conserve their original layout and the construction features associated with their defensive purpose, with walls, battlements, towers, fortifications, both modern and original gates and...

The wall of Lugo is both a historical visit and an entertaining experience. It’s also a wonderful way to have your first encounter with Lugo and its historic center.
The first and most interesting thing is that it is walkable, allowing you to explore the entire city by strolling along its two and a half kilometers of circumference atop the wall. Since I visited York in England years ago, I hadn’t had the chance to walk along a wall that completely encircles a city, and I loved it.
We’re talking about a Roman wall from the 3rd century, which is no small feat. While it may not have the beauty of the one in Ávila, it is undoubtedly a historical gem in every possible aspect.
The experience of walking along the wall is something you cannot miss. It offers views of the city that are definitely worth it. It’s true that parts of Lugo's historic center are somewhat shabby and in need of significant investment and renovation, but its value is unquestionable. HIGHLY...
