The Pettah Market history and background: Pettah Market an open market in the suburb of Pettah in the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka. The entrance to the Pettah Market is marked formally by a tall monument in the centre of a roundabout, known as the Khan Clock Tower which was built by the family of Framjee Bhickajee Khan, an eminent Parsi family from Bombay who used to have substantial business interests in the country and who also owned the Colombo Oil Mills. The Colombo Old Town Hall & Museum, which was built by the prominent Muslim Arasi Marikar Wapchie Marikar, is located at Kayman's Gate, so named because the Dutch used to stock crocodiles at Beira Lake to prevent their slaves from escaping. Today the building acts as a post office on the ground floor, and as a museum on the upper floor. Outside, there is an exhibit of old steam engines.

The market to go to buy both food, clothing, electronics and everything else at rock bottom prices. The best deal we found among the food items were the fruits. They are much cheaper here. For example, you can get 5 oranges at 100 rupees (US$0.55). If you are a tourist, I recommend buying the exotic tropical fruits here to try out - soursop (the miracle fruit with anti-cancer properties), chikus, mangoes etc. Among the clothing items, I found the women's clothes not fashionable enough, and the shoes and bags too low in quality. We struggled to find men's shorts for my husband because he wanted something in a quick drying synthetic material that is not shiny, and such shorts do not exist here. But I was happy to buy beautiful and very sparkly costume jewelry at very low prices - so low I didn't even bother to bargain. For instance, I bought a pair of dazzling earrings for 200 rupees (US$1.10) and an amazing bracelet for 300 rupees (US$1.65). Belts and slippers were also great deals and we bought some after some haggling. Despite the good deals, we are unlikely to come back because we find the market too stressful. It was impossible to walk on the pavements because they don't exist in some parts, and it's so scary to walk on the narrow and very busy streets because you could easily be knocked down by a passing vehicle. It didn't help that some of the stall owners were quite aggressive in calling at you to buy from them. After just one hour, we were totally worn out from the noise, dirt and chaos. For a good shopping experience, it is worth paying more elsewhere.

The Pettah Market or Manning Market is an open market in the suburb of Pettah in Colombo. One can find a wide range of goods right, from electronics to fashion accessories, and market vendors selling anything from fresh vegetables and fruits to meat and seafood. Being one of Colombo's busiest places, the area may seem a little chaotic at first glance but if you know what to get on which street then you are going to walk out with some cool stuff at surprisingly low prices. It is a popular shopping area for both locals and foreign travelers as they take back a wide range of cheap stuff. Many new shops keep popping up every other day. Apart from these, at the end of Pettah lies Sea Street, which is Sri Lanka's gold market and attracts buyers of gold jewelry from all around Sri Lanka. It is a long street of jewelry shops with hundreds of shops next to one another.

The Pettah Market, named after the suburb where it is located, is the largest and most famous market in Colombo. Pettah is actually a collection of street blocks with maddening traffic, noise and haggling. You will find vendors selling anything from fresh vegetables, meats and seafood to jewelry, clothing and electronic goods. The numerous streets are dedicated to different trades, with one of the most notable being sea street at the end of the open market, specialized in the trading of gold and jewels. With the multitude of labyrinthine side lanes, it is hard to take in every angle of Pettah market. PRO TIP: Take a tuk-tuk or taxi to one of the edges of the market and then walk in, to discover all the little shops and goodies Don't miss the candy-striped Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (aka The Red Mosque)

Pettah Market is consistently teeming with activity. Here, you can find a wide range of items at some of the lowest prices available. The market features both wholesale and retail shops, offering everything from food stalls, electronics, and hardware to bags, clothing, shoes, jewelry, and cookware. It's an essential destination for budget-conscious shoppers. The quality of the products sold is surprisingly good considering their affordability. In terms of cleanliness, Pettah Market may not be the best, but given its nature as a bustling market, the conditions are acceptable.

Always visit the pettah market if you’re in Sri Lanka. The best place to buy basically everything if you know where to go. You have to search a bit if you’re new and you will probably have to negotiate the prices but you can find everything here. It’ll always be crowded but exciting at the same time. Enjoy! Oh don’t forget to buy pickled fruits at the end of the 2nd cross street. 😉 Suggest if you take a public transportation and come here coz the nearest vehicle park is a bit far. Wear your running shoes 👟.
