"Pettah Market at Colombo" The location is at the middle of Colombo, and next to the Central Bus Stand and Main Railway Station – Colombo Fort. So, this automatically become the main center for business and transport and the busiest market place in Sri Lanka. It's much look like an Indian street but this is a one & only srilankan very crowded place most of the time. Main buses are going through this place to petta ctb bus stand. Be warned about your wallet or your valuable things The businesses of Pettah Market are doing by Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim, all the main races of Sri Lankans. Pettah Market is very famous among local people as this place is having lot of selection of goods and very busy too. There are also cheating and drug addicted people and must be careful from them. Must keep your valuable things, belongings, purse and money safe while walk through this market. u need in bulk. The freshness of fruits and vegetablesnis genuine most of the time because anything that comes here is mostly sold within the day The market distributes a lot of wholesale fruits and vegetables, so many buy in bulk. Most o the businesses are wholesale, so you have to buy in larger quantities but there are also many retail shops. All kinds of spices, vegetables and fruits are available. This market is the one stop place to find any food item you need in bulk. The freshness of fruits and vegetablesnis genuine most of the time because anything that comes here is mostly sold within the day The things available at Pettah Market are cheaper than buying at stores or shops. But the things sell on the street has no guarantee and the sellers are not permanent, so, check thoroughly before buy. Anyway, this is interesting to see the things available at Pettah Market, and definitely, there are many things you will find useful to buy and also there are always many new arrivals you cannot find or available at any other markets in Sri Lanka. The Pettah Market history and background: Pettah Market an open market in the suburb of Pettah in the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka. The entrance to the Pettah Market is marked formally by a tall monument in the centre of a roundabout, known as the Khan Clock Tower which was built by the family of Framjee Bhickajee Khan, an eminent Parsi family from Bombay who used to have substantial business interests in the country and who also owned the Colombo Oil Mills. The Colombo Old Town Hall & Museum, which was built by the prominent Muslim Arasi Marikar Wapchie Marikar, is located at Kayman's Gate, so named because the Dutch used to stock crocodiles at Beira Lake to prevent their slaves from escaping. Today the building acts as a post office on the ground floor, and as a museum on the upper floor. Outside, there is an exhibit of old steam engines.

The market to go to buy both food, clothing, electronics and everything else at rock bottom prices. The best deal we found among the food items were the fruits. They are much cheaper here. For example, you can get 5 oranges at 100 rupees (US$0.55). If you are a tourist, I recommend buying the exotic tropical fruits here to try out - soursop (the miracle fruit with anti-cancer properties), chikus, mangoes etc. Among the clothing items, I found the women's clothes not fashionable enough, and the shoes and bags too low in quality. We struggled to find men's shorts for my husband because he wanted something in a quick drying synthetic material that is not shiny, and such shorts do not exist here. But I was happy to buy beautiful and very sparkly costume jewelry at very low prices - so low I didn't even bother to bargain. For instance, I bought a pair of dazzling earrings for 200 rupees (US$1.10) and an amazing bracelet for 300 rupees (US$1.65). Belts and slippers were also great deals and we bought some after some haggling. Despite the good deals, we are unlikely to come back because we find the market too stressful. It was impossible to walk on the pavements because they don't exist in some parts, and it's so scary to walk on the narrow and very busy streets because you could easily be knocked down by a passing vehicle. It didn't help that some of the stall owners were quite aggressive in calling at you to buy from them. After just one hour, we were totally worn out from the noise, dirt and chaos. For a good shopping experience, it is worth paying more elsewhere.
