I recently had the pleasure of visiting Amangalla in Galle Fort with one of my German clients, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. This hotel stands as one of the oldest and most iconic properties within the historic Galle Fort, and it beautifully blends colonial-era charm with world-class hospitality.

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine warmth and professionalism. The entire team from the front desk to the restaurant staff was attentive, courteous, and consistently exceeded our expectations. My client, who has stayed at many top-tier hotels across the world, was equally impressed by the level of personalized service and attention to detail.

The architecture and interiors of Amangalla are something special. The property is rich in history, with antique furniture, wide verandas, high ceilings, and well-preserved colonial touches that transport you back in time. The atmosphere is peaceful and refined, making it a perfect getaway spot right in the heart of the bustling Galle Fort.

We spent a relaxing afternoon by the serene pool and enjoyed a delicious meal at the restaurant. The food was outstanding fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The traditional high tea was also a highlight, served on the veranda with views of the charming surroundings.

One thing to note for future visitors is that Amangalla does not have its own dedicated parking facility. Since the hotel is located within the narrow streets of the Galle Fort, guests arriving by car may need to park a short distance away and walk to the property. While this wasn’t a major issue for us, it’s something to be aware of if you’re traveling with luggage or require easier access.

That said, Amangalla remains one of the finest heritage hotels in Sri Lanka a perfect blend of history, elegance, and comfort. I highly recommend it for anyone visiting Galle, whether for leisure or to host special guests. Despite the lack of parking, the overall experience is exceptional and...

We recently stopped at the Aman hotel in Galle for lunch, hoping to enjoy a final moment of refinement before heading to the airport in Colombo. We had just come from Tangalle and thought this would be a serene midpoint. Instead, the experience was so appalling that it entirely disrupted the peaceful rhythm of our trip.||Lunch was a complete let-down—shockingly expensive and served cold. The food lacked any character, finesse, or care, and the service was, quite frankly, horrendous. Staff were inattentive, disorganised, and appeared neither trained nor briefed on even the basics of hospitality. It was clear from the outset that this property is Aman in name only and I had to double check that we were in the right place. ||After a short walk around Galle Fort, we returned to the hotel to have a drink while waiting for our driver. We ordered a sparkling water with lime and a coconut water. What arrived was baffling: a glass of bitter, undrinkable lime juice that had clearly been blended into sparkling water—completely overpowering and unbalanced. The coconut water was served warm, which in tropical heat is both unrefreshing and unacceptable. When we questioned the delay and poor service, staff looked confused and tried to argue. I requested to speak with the duty manager, who simply disappeared. No apology. No follow-up. Just rudeness and a total lack of accountability.||This hotel is not just below Aman standard—it’s below the standard of any respectable hospitality venue. Our visit was a stressful, frustrating end to what had been an otherwise tranquil holiday. I cannot emphasise this enough: do not waste your time or money here. The service will raise your blood pressure rather than...

An effortlessly atmospheric, elegant, timeless stay.

Unique among Aman properties, this heritage hotel is nevertheless oozing character from the evening live string music to the barbershop. If I imagine what luxury travel must have been like a century ago, this is what I picture: Polished service, decadent food, high beds with excellent mattresses!

Pros: Service: Amans are well-known for the service (even though rumour says their standards globally have slipped noticably as of late), but Amangalla is a time capsule in itself: Attentive butler service with every request attended to. Charm: Without a doubt the most atmospheric hotel I have ever stayed at, feeling at times almost like an immersive theatre production. Comfort: The rooms are generously laid out, with ample lounging rooms and supremely comfortable beds. The hydrotherapy suite is a nice plus.

Cons: Brusque security: The typical Aman greeting of "Welcome home Mr/Ms xxx" is replaced with a security guard blocking the front door pointedly (and ineloquently) asking "Yes?! Yes?!" about my intentions to enter the property. I understand that unlike most secluded Aman properties Amangalla is integrated with the fabric of the old city and open to the public, but after my third time in a day being halted by the same guard my patience was running quite thin. Pricing: Amans are quite expensive, but the cost is (usually) justified by the seclusion and exclusivity of the setting. At Amangalla, both are missing (as mentioned before, the main part of the ground floor is open to the public, and the property directly faces a busy main city thoroughfare). Caveat emptor I suppose - personally I found it to be...
