The best collection of bird taxidermy I have ever seen. Beats the National History Museum in London, which displays only a handful of species in comparison. Some of the exhibits here date back to the 19th century! Of course some examples are a bit goofy but for early taxidermy they still hold up pretty nicely. You can compare different bird species across the world, including such continents like the Americas, Australia, Europe and Asia. There is also a room showing early dioramas showing birds in their natural habitats. These are ingenious and nice to look at. A different great room is devoted to marine animals, with the big blue whale model towering over other sea mammals. Another impressive encounter is in the land mammals section, where you can find a preserved African Elephant. I would only complain that the absence of English labels is quite painful. I could not learn about the dioramas or a Swedish scientist who prepared them, also all animals are only presented by their Swedish and Latin name. There are also minor inconveniences, like a faulty elevator or an uninspired shop with too little actual scientific books. The collection is great but I would hope for some more adjustment to make the experience more enjoyable!

This place is amazing. It's worth the visit definitely especially if you have kids but even adults who are interested in wildlife will find this place magnificent. The entry is free of charge and you can easily reach this place by public transport to the bussstop Linne platsen. In this museum you can see almost all sorts of wildlife from insects, to brids, to mammals and even dinosaurs and whales. The animals are real and are stuffed and beautifully preserved. Makes you wonder and contemplate the variety of creatures on this planet and how big/ small they actually are. This is a great place to learn about animals without having to suffer from the smell of zoos or the feeling of captivity. Very interesting and the place is clean and tidy. Toilets are present and the workers were so nice and helpful. They deserve a raise. I definitely recommend this place.

Gothenburg Natural History Museum could easily charge entrance fees and that wouldn’t deter visitors as it’s such an excellent museum that’s well put together with impressive, well-maintained exhibits. It’s easy to spend 1-2 hours at this museum just appreciating the different types of exhibits they had within the realm of natural history, from bird life to marine creatures. A good spot for a very low-cost day out with the family or even a date. They have a very good souvenir store too. If ever in Gothenburg, I would highly recommend a visit to this lovely museum. The Ontario Science Centre could learn a thing or two from this fantastic, free, science / natural history museum in Gothenburg!

I could not resist having a look around the museum when I was in the Slottsskogen and saw it was free entry! An interesting place with plenty to see. There is a diverse range of animals and displays throughout. There must literally be a life size version of nesrly every bird in history, it must be literally thousands on display. The actual size whale skeleton room was impressive and also the main room with life size elephant in the middle surrounded by lots of other animals and displays. A great place for a family to visit with children. The gift shop has some very nice little crafted goods, amongst the usual stuffed toy animals.

First time I see (and probably only time, since this one seems to be the only specimen of) a dissected whale!! I have no idea walruses were so big! There's also a model of a now extinct animal As usual, you will come out of this place knowing a lot more than what you did before you came in. You'll also probably see 45 birds you hadn't seen before. Beautiful selection and excellent organization. I'm not a huge fan of insects, so I just went really quickly through that section, but I enjoyed the rest quite a lot. Obviously, extra points for the stegosaurus 💜

Taking the kids to Slottsskogen in the weekend has become a nobrainer these days! you get children's park, play area, botanical garden, this amazing museum, easy stroll option into city center etc. Nice parking facilities nearby. Museum has everything about animals, birds, fish and insects, a great place to learn for kids, and adults too. For smaller kids this is better than zoo or Universeum as they can get too close to see the details clearly. Polar bear, seal and Crocodiles have been added recently and they look life like!
