8 MUST VISIT TEMPLES IN CHIANG MAI: 🛕Wat Sri Suphan Known as the silver temple, you will see why! This temple was originally built in the Mangrai dynasty but has now been renovated to include pop culture references. Visit and see how many you can find. But note, women are not allowed inside this temple 🛕Wat Rajamontean A very small Buddhist temple, with a huge statue of Buddha right off the main road. You won’t find many other people here when you visit. The stairway up to the temple is so photogenic 🛕Wat Lok Moli Right across the street from the above temple, make a quick stop in to see the ornate details 🛕Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Probably the most famous temple in Chiang Mai, but also the furthest from the city. This temple will require a taxi ride up the hill, and many stairs to climb, but the views are totally worth it! 🛕Wat Pha Lat Don’t skip this one if you are already visiting Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, it’s on the way back to Chiang Main center and way less crowded! 🛕Wat Suan Dok One of the more quiet temples that also features a historic mausoleum 🛕Wat Phra Singh Woranahawihan Notable by its many gold pagodas, this is a beautiful kept temple with lots of greenery. Google says it doesn’t open till 9am, but I think it opens way earlier, as it was already crowded when we arrived at 9am. 🛕Wat Chedi Luang Smack dab in the heart of Chiang Mai, this might not be the prettiest temple, but definitely the most significant as the main pillar is believed to protect the city of Chiang Mai. You can’t go wrong with stopping by any of the many temples in Chiang Mai that look interesting to you as you pass by. I happened upon this place after visiting Wat Lok Molee. I found that the wats that I happened upon that I never saw on websites and blogs tended to be the most interesting and beautiful.

This one was no exception. Great architecture and the big buddha is lovely. The viharn was hot and not really worth going inside. They seem to have put all the effort on the outside.

วัดราชมณเฑียร ตั้งอยู่ข้างคลองคูเมือง ตรงข้ามวัดโลกโมลี เป็นวัดเก่าแก่อายุเกือบ 600 ปี สร้างขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 1974 เป็นวัดแรกที่พระเจ้าติโลกราช กษัตริย์สมัยราชวงศ์มังราย ทรงสร้างขึ้นเมื่อพระองค์ทรงราชาภิเษกเป็นพระเจ้าแผ่นดินปกครองเมืองเชียงใหม่ โดยได้รื้อพระตำหนักราชมณเฑียรส่วนพระองค์มาสร้างเป็นวัด พระองค์ทรงพระราชทานนามวัดนี้ว่า "วัดราชมณเฑียร" ดังปรากฏข้อความว่า

"เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๑๙๗๔ เดือน ๗ ในปีนั้นชาวเมืองทั้งหลายพร้อมกันปลงศพ พระยาสามฝั่งแกน แล้วจึงอาราธนาเอาลูกท่าน ชื่อท้าวลกมากินเมืองเชียงใหม่ เดือน ๘ ออก ๕ ค่ำ เม็งวันอังคาร ได้ราชาภิเษกชื่อว่า อาทิตตราชดิลก หรือ ติโลกราช และท่านรู้ข่าวว่า พระมหาญาณคัมภีร์เถรเจ้า ไปเอาศาสนามารอด ท่านก็ยินดีมากนัก และพระยาอาทิตย์ และพระมหาเทวี จึงพร้อมกันให้รื้อหอราชมณเฑียรหลังเก่าไปสร้างที่พระมหาเถรเจ้าจักอยู่ และได้ชื่อว่า วัดราชมณเฑียร ดังนี้แล"

เมื่ออาณาจักรล้านนาล่มสลาย ตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของพม่า วัดในอาณาจักรล้านนาจึงรกร้าง กระทั่งเมื่อพระเจ้ากาวิละได้กอบกู้เอกราชของแคว้นล้านนาคืนมา จึงได้บูรณะวัดราชมณเฑียรขึ้นใหม่

ภายในวัดราชมณเฑียร ประดิษฐาน พระประธาน เป็นพระพุทธรูปหินทราย องค์ใหญ่ แกะสลักทรงเครื่อง เป็นเอกลักษณ์ ประดิษฐานภายในพระวิหารลายคำ ซึ่งในปัจจุบัน ไม่มีการสร้างพระพุทธรูปจากหินทรายแล้ว และบริเวณด้านข้างพระวิหาร ประดิษฐาน พระเจ้าหลวงทันใจองค์ใหญ่ ซึ่งหากขับรถรอบคูเมืองเชียงใหม่...
