Benchakitti park (also 'Benjakiti'/ 'Benjakitti' depending where you search) is a large green space and wetland complex situated right in the heart of Bangkok in the Klong Toei district. The main gate is a five minute walk from Sukumvit road, and a further five minutes from Asok BTS station. It is also known as 'Queen Sirikit Park'.
There are two main entrances to the park.
The park consists of a large purpose built lake with an oval walking/ jogging track surrounding it. This was the original park space. Here there are a few nice memorial areas featuring different architectural styles, and a run down skateboard ramp. There is also a toilet block. This part of the park is adjacent to the famous skyscraper vista, and you can get some great sunset photos from the far side of the lake. There are plenty of fish in the run off areas under the bridges here, and even a few large water monitor lizards.
If you leave this area and head across the road into the "new" site, you will be met with the entrance to an extensive sky walk which hovers over a man made wetland. There are clumps of giant mature trees every where, grassy verges and lots of ponds and water ways that are still settling in from being dug and dressed with water plants.
We spotted ducks, egret, herons and a few open billed storks, as well as the usual gangs of sparrows, pigeons, jungle crows, mynas and even a flock of flitting scaly breasted munia. As the wetlands settle in, I would expect to see a lot more bird species, as well as monitor lizards and even fresh water turtles.
The walk around the sky track inevitably comes back down to ground level at various turns and you can take a stroll through the ponds on cement gang ways and cycle paths. Watch out for the water sprinklers!!!
The are numerous places to rest, including a covered area bit like a pergola, with some reclusive tables and chairs to sit and chat at.
Heading back in the direction of the Sukumvit road, there is a railing fenced, well maintained tree garden in neat even plots. Lots of tree species, many labelled, see birds such as collared starlings, Asian pied starlings, Indian Rollers, Asian fairy bluebirds, coucals, Asian koels, Orioles and the usual common mynas hopping around on the grass or perching in the canopies.
A word of warning about the main entrance road. This gate on Ratchadaphisek road is easily accessible from Asok BTS without having to cross any major roads. However, if you are on the 'wrong' side of the road be very aware that the traffic here is lethal. It is a major thoroughfare for large trucks, people will regularly cut lanes to go into the park entrance with no indication whatsoever and motorcycle taxi guys very much see the road, and pavement as their domain.
A great place to go and relax if you need to get away from the constant buzz of the city. Take snacks, sunscreen, and water...
Read moreAs an avid runner Benchakitti is my escape from the chaos of Bangkok. Just a stones throw from Soi Sukhumvit it’s ideally placed for those who live in central Bangkok or those who are just visiting and staying at one of the downtown hotels. As a ‘new’ park it has been very well thought out. Lots of different paths to explore, different areas of planting, raised walkways to get a different view. The ‘Skywalk’ is lit up at night and gives a great view of the surroundings. The recent addition of sports courts in the old abandoned tobacco factory is a great touch. They are in use throughout the day for futsal, paddle and basketball. There are also paddle boats and kayaks which are free to borrow. There is a small ‘play ground’ for children in the centre however the park isn’t really set out for young children with climbing frames and swings etc. Early in the mornings and in the evenings the park is a haven for runners, walkers and cyclists but never feels too busy unlike nearby Lumphini Park which can at busy times feel like you’re taking part in the Bangkok Marathon. For running and cycling geeks like me there are plenty of Strava segments to challenge yourself. Cyclists are welcome at the park with their own cycle lane, the track is around 2.5km long. I’ve cycled there a few times and although there is supposedly a 15kmph speed limit, as long as the park isn’t too busy and you’re careful at the pedestrian crossing points the park security aren’t too bothered if you want to go much faster. If you do want to explore further you can use the ‘Green mile’ (a pathway linking Benchakitti with Lumphini park) which makes running/walking options even better. For dog owners there is a very nice ‘Dog park’ where dogs can wander around the paths although I’m not sure they’re allowed to be off the leash. There is a large carpark for those that stay a little further away. The only things missing are some shops or stalls selling drinks like at Lumphini Park. However, just outside the main gate are local stalls selling cold drinks including my favourite fresh coconuts for only 40 baht. There are however numerous drinking fountains around the park including one that is chilled next to the basketball courts. I love the fact that the park is extremely well maintained, gardeners are constantly working to maintain the plants. It’s also spotlessly clean with zero rubbish. There are numerous toilets around the park which are generally...
