There are definitely some positives to Sofitel Dubai Downtown. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable, and the housekeeping staff were consistently kind and helpful. The hotel is also within walking distance of Dubai Mall, though it’s about a 15–20 minute walk and, apart from one nearby restaurant, there isn’t much else in the immediate area.||That said, my overall experience was very disappointing. The facilities on the 5th floor — including the main swimming pool and kids’ area — were closed for renovation throughout my stay. These were key reasons I booked here, especially since my sister and brother-in-law (who were also staying) have an 18-month-old child. We would have never booked here if this was known. The closure of these main facilities was not mentioned at any stage during booking or check-in, and when I brought this up, staff simply shrugged their shoulders and offered no meaningful explanation. The hotel’s website and booking platforms still advertise these facilities as open, despite staff telling us the renovation would last the whole month.||We were offered access to an alternative pool and kids’ area, but the pool was subpar and felt more like what you would expect at a low-star property, not a 5-star hotel. The experience simply did not match what is advertised on the website.||To make matters worse, the “family room” my sister and brother-in-law booked was actually smaller than the standard room I had for myself, which made little sense and added to the feeling that the hotel isn’t really set up for families.||I also found it disappointing that there was no acknowledgement of the situation — no apology, no attempt at compensation, and no gesture of goodwill. For a property of this level, I would have expected more care in how this was communicated and handled.||Overall, I think this hotel may work better for business travellers or couples, but I wouldn’t recommend it for families.
