The Curve Theatre impresses from the outside....until you get right up close to it. I can think of no other modern theatre I have visited where the entrance and exit are so unlovely and uninviting. The street dining area - for the brave souls who wish to have a coffee outside whilst fending off beggars - is tiny and in shadow, which surely defeats the purpose.
By contrast, the inside bar, cafe, and waiting areas are well thought through. There is a wonderful sense of space that is almost cathedral-like in its impact. There is, however, insufficient seating for the numbers seeking it. Given the age(ing) profile of most theatre going audiences in the UK, this is no small matter.
The staff here were unfailingly polite and helpful (which feels like a bonus in these 'post service' times). The toilets, when I used them, were clean and well maintained (which is a definite bonus).
The main auditorium itself is an impressive modern theatre going space with comfortable seats and plenty of leg room (everything that Frank Matcham theatres aren't).
I was here to see "The Book Thief," a brave, powerfully emotive, but relentlessly downbeat, new musical. The staging was drab and spare. The lighting, harsh and sepia. But what unfolded was engaging and enriching. The setting of this musical was historical, but it felt current. Words are still being stolen from us and used against others in ways that should always...
Read moreWent to see Ghost Stories which was excellent. Also came to see The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe last year. I booked seats at the end of the aisle so we could make a quick escape at the end. Very busy place and you can end up queuing to get into the car park next door if you drive, so leave plenty of time. If you park there, go to customer services where you can pay for your parking ticket before the show - this saves time as you can exit straight after without queuing at the ticket station. My only niggle is how people bring in open wine/pint/coke glasses from the bar. One child balanced their coke on the arm of their chair then knocked it flying and it went all over my elderly mother who was sitting directly behind. No apology from child or parent but regardless, if the drink had a lid, it wouldn't have happened. I also saw people on the front row putting their wine glasses on the actual stage, which was unsafe and disrespectful. Why do people bring massive bags of sweets or crisps and make an absolute racket during the show - it's not a cinema, it's a theatre! If people must have snacks, empty them into a tub beforehand so there's no rustling. I probably sound like a moaning old woman but overall, it's a good place to visit for a show and I will go again if something comes up...
Read moreI am sorry to say that I was incredibly disappointed with the performance of Girl On A Train, on Tuesday 20th May 2025. Firstly, there was far too much smoke/mist - some smoke creates a good atmosphere, especially for a thriller/mystery but too much just makes everyones eyes water! Unfortunately, that was not the worst issue! The most important problem on the night was definitely the sound. It was very unbalanced and spoilt the enjoyment of many people around me. The dialogue was far too quiet, especially the lead female actor, who also had very poor diction (which didn't help). In contrast, the general sound effects were very loud and quite effective and the music was very good, but when you're missing some of the conversations, it made the story very difficult to follow. It was such a shame! We did speak to one of the Curve members of staff at the interval and we were promised that the issue would be passed on immediately - there was absolutely no difference during the second half, so that was a waste of time. My sister and others complained to another staff member after the performance and again, we were promised that this would be addressed. Curve are charging a lot of money for tickets and this kind of issue is unprofessional and should be addressed prior to the...
