Zaap Thai Street Food York — Restaurant in England

I cannot recommend this restaurant due to its poor service, rushed dining experience, and potential discriminatory practices against Asian customers. A respectful and enjoyable dining experience should be the standard, which was starkly missing here. I visited this Thai restaurant during the York festival weekend and was deeply disappointed. After waiting in a queue outside despite empty seats inside, we were finally seated. We faced a long wait of over ten minutes for our food, which, upon arrival, had a noticeable burnt smell, forcing us to eat quickly.

The dining experience was further spoiled by the service. Within less than 30 minutes of receiving our meal, we were pressed by the staff to pay and leave. This rush was particularly upsetting as I hadn't even finished my tea. Additionally, a 10% service charge was added to our bill without prior notice.

I observed a potential discriminatory practice; British guests were not hurried like Asian customers, suggesting bias in treatment.

When my friend later approached the staff to discuss our concerns, the response was merely perfunctory, with a hastily written apology note that lacked sincerity. This dismissive attitude compounded our disappointment.

The manager's lukewarm response and reluctant refund offer for the service charge did little to amend the situation. The overall experience was unwelcoming and deeply upsetting, ruining...

Absolute chaos! Arrived at 6.15 ,waited with 8 others to be seated for 10 minutes, took us all upstairs where it was empty!? Took our orders 15 minutes later and after 10 minutes we managed to get our drinks, after sever had tried to give them to 3 other couples, it gets better, as we had ordered first upstairs we thought we may have been served first, but no, although the tables are clearly numbered, servers tried to give one of our courses to 4 other couples, one of whom had come in last decided to have it and then there were some people who hadn't even ordered , it seems as though they take menu away when you've ordered, were presented with other people's food 4 separate times, drinks twice. After about an hour and a quarter waiter apologised and said we were next, you guessed it, he served three other couples next and then ours arrived. After all that I didn't quite rate it, but when I tried to pay the bill he gave me someone else's Bill which was 3 times the cost, he tried to counter it with saying there was a mix up with orders but still expected me to pay! Really disappointed with our meal last night and the service was terrible. We were seated quickly and told to use our phones to view the menu (difficult on my iPhone mini) no option of a paper menu was offered and we did witness other tables with paper menus, we are aware of COVID restrictions but if others had the choice then surely we should of been given the same. We waited quite a while before being asked for our order and then another twenty minutes or so before our drinks arrived (2 bottles of beer, not Chang as they didn’t have any). After another delay - our sharing platter starter came which wasn’t great and a tiny portion at that. Worse still, within a couple of minutes they brought out our main meals. Hardly any room on the table and no chance of handing them back to keep warm. The meals themselves were dry and any sauce virtually non-existent.
