I live about 20 miles away but despite that I've been to the Stephen Joseph Theatre (SJT) several times over the years and have been to see live performances of plays and pantomime "in the round", as well as my most recent visit to see a cinema film for the first time in the other "traditional" theatre, though I have seen a couple of "live" performances in the latter too. Essentially the SJT is just a World Class venue, the seating is comfortable in both theatres, the steep rake/slope of them makes viewing of proceedings a delight in not having to peer around a "tall" person sitting in the row in front of you even if you're "short". The ticket prices are very reasonable and, in this day and age, still affordable-- I'm a Yorkshireman, and I haven't ever even thought of proclaiming "HOW MUCH ??!!" when the SJT is concerned. As to the variety of performances and shows, etc., the SJT always puts on a quality event and there's always lots to choose from, often with a choice of daytime and evening performances. Advance booking/purchase is probably best because it's understandably a pretty popular venue and long may...
Read moreI used to go to the cinema about once a week in Manchester (at the Odeon just off Deansgate). I've been living in Scarborough since Feb. 2022 and have wanted to see films at the SJT but haven't seen anything advertised that I would be interested in seeing. Almost all either films released 35 to 40 years ago (in some cases 70 years ago) or very niche films for a niche market. I don't want or expect 'Marvel' garbage but 'Calamity Jane' (1953) and carry on Constable (1960)to name two examples. There don't seem to be many films generally at the SJT. Scarborough needs a good multiplex cinema with plenty of choice (in the town centre, not on some out of town retail park)
I wanted to see the new (2023) version of 'all quiet on the western front' but with only 2 showings missed it. In my opinion a film like that should have 4-6 showings.
I wanted to see the 2023 Ridley Scott film 'Napoleon' but the SJT are not even doing one screening of it. The staff in the foyer are helpful. There will be a new cinema in the shopping centre - but apparently and unfortunately...
Read moreThis theater is really original. It consists of several different T spaces, and the only one I have experienced is the theater in the round. The productions are way more frequent in the summer than say 5 or 6 years ago, and this is because, as I understand it, the theater lost part of its Arts Council funding, so has had to tighten its collective belt considerably. But in a way that is to the advantage of the theater goer, as the breadth of productions now is quite stunning, and although Alan Aykeborne is still a recurrent playright in terms of their offerings, due to his close association with the theater, this also provides a good repertory for the theater. My only comment is that it's such a shame that they do not provide food anymore! The food choices in that area are not good, so either plan your evening well so that you have time to go elsewhere for supper, or bring sandwiches!
So in summary, no vacation to the Scarborough is really complete without stopping by and taking in one of the offerings of this jewel of culture in Yorkshire. Thank goodness it is still...
