Brown Hart Gardens is one of London’s best-kept secrets — a peaceful elevated terrace right in the heart of Mayfair, offering a welcome escape from the city’s noise and pace. Tucked just a short walk from Oxford Street, it’s an unexpectedly tranquil spot that combines elegant architecture, thoughtful urban design, and a touch of history.
What makes Brown Hart Gardens truly unique is its setting. It sits atop a functioning electricity substation, originally built in the early 1900s. Instead of letting this infrastructure dominate the space, planners created a charming raised garden with smart paving, planters, and benches — the result is a surprisingly serene environment that feels almost hidden in plain sight.
There’s a lovely café on one end, perfect for a coffee or light lunch, and the surrounding buildings — including the striking Beaumont Hotel — lend the place an old-world elegance. The domed pavilion and neatly arranged flower beds create a sense of calm that’s rare in central London.
Whether you're a local looking for a quiet reading spot or a visitor wanting to rest your feet after shopping, Brown Hart Gardens is a brilliant place to unwind. It's also a fantastic example of how imaginative urban planning can transform a utilitarian space into a community asset.
Highly recommended for anyone exploring Mayfair or seeking a quiet moment in one of London’s busiest...
Read moreVisited today, 23rd August 2020. Blackboard referred to selections of meats and cheeses which was tempting. The waitress told us that they were not available. I enquired why the board was on display, in that case. She said she would remove if i wanted her to - which she did.
I enquired why this offering was not available and was told that they were short staffed and she had a broken wrist - which was not evident.
I requested a receipt and was told that neither the "till" nor the credit card machine could provide a receipt - but she did agree to hand write one.
We had coffee. The cups were half full so we requested hot water.
The WC facility was moderate - in the present situation we would have expected a higher standard of cleanliness. A toilet roll on the floor was not good.
This has always been a favourate place but todays experience combined with a surly attitude was not...
Read moreYou may have walked past this a few times wondering what exactly the structure at the front of these gardens is and this is actually one of the fancy designed entrances to the sub level London power grid.
The garden that you can find up the stairs is great for private talks and a great resting place for your walk down Oxford Street.
The place is well kept and has a nice little garden. If however you are looking for a proper garden to visit then this is not the place for you. Hyde park corner is just a 5 minute walk from here where you can experience the best of London's nature.
If you are however looking for a nice spot to catch up after work then feel free to head on...
