The atmosphere was certainly charming, though charm alone wears thin after 45 minutes queueing for a table. We were welcomed by a delightful hostess at the door, but alas, our experience soured the moment we reached our table. The lady taking our order (pregnant and seemingly thoroughly unimpressed by the notion of customer service) could not have made us feel less welcome. No warm greeting, no enquiry about our choice of fish, and certainly no farewell. I had to summon her back just to specify the fish we wanted, which rather defeated the point of dining out. Management would do well to take note of this lady’s behaviour. Travellers travel from corners of the world to eat at this place and that’s not the behaviour one expects, but maybe that’s her way of representing her country - by being rude!
As for the food, the chips were arid little relics, and the cod dripped oil like a North Sea rig. We’ve had far better fish and chips in unassuming London chippies for half the price. Quite how this establishment secured a Michelin star remains a mystery… Perhaps the secret lies in their tartar sauce, which, to be fair, was THE BEST I’VE TRIED in the whole world (so far).
The bill came to £100 for three meals, and frankly, it stung because of the reasons stated above.
To visiting tourists: don’t squander your time or money here. Head to Soho for a proper plate, or, if you’re seaside bound, Brighton’s Captain Fish by the pier; unpretentious, glorious, and in my view the finest in the country with definitely cheerful staff. This place? All smoke, mirrors, and Instagram hype.
Oh and their all-gender restroom reeked of urine and it seemed...
Read moreTucked away just a short stroll from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, Mayfair Chippy is a charming little spot that makes for a great lunch stop after a day of shopping in central London.
The restaurant itself is quite small, with cosy and tightly packed seating, but the stylish decor adds a nice touch to the atmosphere. There’s a small amount of outdoor seating available too, which is great on a warm day. Service was excellent—friendly, attentive, and efficient.
One thing to note for families: while they do offer a kids’ menu, you’ll need to ask for it, as it’s not listed on the main menu. We ordered the cod bites and chips for the kids. The cod—both in the regular and kids’ portions—was absolutely spot on. The batter was light and crispy, with the fish inside remaining perfectly moist. They also offer gluten-free and non-alcoholic batter options, which is a big plus for those with dietary preferences or restrictions. We tried the non-alcoholic battered cod and cod bites, and they were just as delicious as the traditional version.
The only letdown was the chips. They were unfortunately overcooked—too crunchy and dry for our taste, which was a bit disappointing considering the otherwise high quality of the meal.
Prices are on the higher side, but that’s to be expected given the prime central London location. Overall, Mayfair Chippy is a great pick for classic British fish and chips with a bit of finesse. Would happily return—just hoping for better...
Read moreFrom the name, you could be mistaken for thinking that you were arriving at a takeaway when going to The Mayfair Chippy. But don’t be alarmed, this is quality food well-cooked by expert chefs. Fish is very much at the heart of this restaurant, but alongside it comes excellent service that makes you feel both valued and at home. Great!
To start our lunch, my friend and I went for the crisp salmon crackling with dill & mustard, six Carlingford rock oysters, steamed mussels served with sourdough bread and the Dexter salt beef fritters with creamed horseradish & pickles. We shared everything so could get a taste of all that was on our table. The food was cooked to perfection and compliments to the chef!
There was only ever going to be one main course in a place like this. As you look around the restaurant and see those little design flourishes that make it feel like a high-end chip shop ramped up to the maximum, the fried cod, chips, mushy peas, tartar & chip shop curry sauce becomes the only possible choice for a main. And so it was. This was excellent, a real treat against some of the lesser fish and chip offers on the market.
Unlike your local chippy, there was a good selection of desert and we went for the warm chocolate pudding, salted caramel Ice cream & cinder toffee and grabbed a spoon each. The food was as good as the attentive service and we both left filled and happy for the...
