We'd pre-booked access tickets and arrived 10 minutes before 11.30. We walked from Southwark Cathedral which we'd visited earlier in the morning. As we had tickets we joined the back of the line, which is undercover. Luckily for us as it had started to rain. If you haven't pre-booked, there are signs telling you to check with the staff before queuing to check availability.
The system of "those with restaurant bookings head straight through & those with access tickets hang on a bit" was working relatively smoothly till a young, and can only assume new in post, chap got stuck in. After being queue jumped by a few families, we did the British thing of eye rolling and tutting before being more continental and striding forward to the bag x-ray and lifts. Up we flew to the 35th (I think....!) floor and exited to a wide open plaza with views of a very grey and rainy London. Due to the weather, the doors to the balcony were closed, so we must revisit to take advantage of that.
There was plenty of seating so I parked hubby and went off to purchase refreshments. Replace "purchase" with "remortgage the house". 2 coffees (good) and 2 slices of cake (dry) came to £21. I now understand why there's so much seating.... Time from ordering to delivery was 15 minutes so once you factor in inflation, was probably closer to £22.
We walked around the perimeter of the garden and got some really lovely views of the best city. There's a cocktail bar at the top (rear) of the garden which was closed when we were there. The plants were very beautiful and you can easily find little pockets of calm.
After our walk around it was quick visit to the toilets (on the same floor) them whizzing back down. My love of a good gift shop was not satisfied by a corner of generic merch in the café...
Read moreThe Fenchurch Building, often referred to as the "Walkie-Talkie" due to its distinctive shape, is a prominent skyscraper located at 20 Fenchurch Street in the heart of the City of London. This iconic building has become a well-known landmark on the London skyline.
One of the standout features of the Fenchurch Building is its unique architectural design. The building's curved and concave shape gives it a distinctive appearance, resembling the top portion of a walkie-talkie device. This design has made it a subject of fascination for both tourists and architects.
The Fenchurch Building is also famous for its impressive Sky Garden, which is located at the top and offers stunning panoramic views of London. This lush indoor garden provides a serene escape from the bustling city below, and visitors can enjoy both the greenery and the breathtaking vistas.
The building's prime location in the heart of London's financial district makes it a hub for business and commerce. It houses offices, restaurants, and various amenities, contributing to its status as a bustling center of activity.
While the Walkie-Talkie has received acclaim for its innovative design and the Sky Garden's scenic views, it also garnered attention when the building's curved glass facade caused intense sunlight reflection, briefly heating nearby areas and even melting a car parked on the street below. This issue was later addressed with modifications to the building.
In conclusion, the Fenchurch Building, or the Walkie-Talkie, is not only an architectural marvel but also a bustling hub in London's financial district. Its unique design and the Sky Garden's panoramic views have made it a notable addition to the city's skyline, drawing visitors from...
Read moreThe views are amazing but sadly from the very beginning the staff fell short in disabled person customer services! When we arrived a lady with an arm sling was busy talking, but stopped to ask very condescendingly do we actually have tickets? I said yes and went to explain i have an access card, where do we go? She cut me off and pointed to a man around 100 metres away, we walked to him, I told him the lady had said to come to him? There's the queue he pointed about 200 people away and I tried to explain again, I have an access card, he turned to me and said WAIT! So I repeated, im a disabled visitor! He then turned to me, changed his tone and said, oh why didnt you say! And started saying I didnt say, just because im not wheelchair user, I was treated very unfairly and abruptly! He then told me to walk BACK over to the first women, who then changed her attitude because he spoke to her in his earpiece! The views are great, your not rushed at all, but the staff including bar staff have awful attitudes and customer skills, the best member of staff I spoke to was a lovely friendly black cleaner lady! She showed me where the disabled loose are! Come on guys, it comes to something when the whole experience staff wise, your most customer focused and friendly staff member was a cleaner!!! Food for thought!!!! Sadly for me the experience was ruined! And our plant identifier app says some of your plants are sick and in...
