I went to the visitor center twice, the first time to find out what there was to do in and around Anchorage. The advice was friendly, but very superficial, and I was only shown where the brochures were, and before I could ask another question, the lady was already talking to someone else. I didn't think that was very nice. The second time I just wanted to know when and where the shuttle to the Native Heritage Center was leaving and I was treated like a little stupid child by being told several times that only this shuttle was currently free, the other two to the zoo and botanical garden were not.but I hadn't even asked about that.As a result, the shuttle left early without me.On the way back from the center, the shuttle left again 10 minutes before the specified time because it was supposedly full.So two other guests and I stood there and we were advised to take a cab. Luckily, another ANHC shuttle driver , Sr. Jéan Anderson was here on his day off. He apologized for his colleague's behaviour and immediately offered to drive us into town in his private car. I would like to thank him very...
Read moreWe visited the log cabin visitor center during the Iditarod. All the staff were very welcoming and friendly. They had free postcards, so you can send some to your family or friends but also can keep some for your own souvenirs. If you are stamp collector, it is a great spot as they have a large box with a lot of unique and interesting stamps. There are two places one is the Log Cabin and another is the visiting center, so you should stop by both. At the log cabin, they have a full box of stamps. And if you get out from there and there is another building, Visitor Information behind it. (1 piece of A4 size paper is not enough to get all the stamps!!) They have a lot of brochures about what to do in Alaska and the possibly tours that you can go on. Many look really interesting and we wish we knew about it sooner as this might be the first stop to pick some really great and trust worthy tour guidea. It is a good stop to get you warm...
Read moreThe staff and volunteers are friendly and knowledgable. Most are lifelong Alaskans with a vast knowledge of the area. Unfortunately, their recommendations are not necessarily the best recommendation -- staff and volunteers are restricted to only offer those businesses in the area that pay money - exorbitant fees for Visit Anchorage to offer their services exclusively. Choose only locally owned businesses and steer-clear of special interest groups. Look for locally owned and Alaskan Native owned businesses within walking distance from any hotel #DowntownAnchorage they will be happy to recommend, the best of the best, no matter if they pay to Visit Anchorage or not. Visit "Anchorage" not a special...
