STAY AWAY! RUN! THE HORROR! A July 2023 review of Wingate by Wyndham Anchorage Downtown/Ship Creek over a six day stay: STAY AWAY! Are the only words to use in regards to this establishment. My family stayed at this horrific location during our Military Moving process. With no car, excessive luggage, small children, and a pet - we had no logical choice but to stay at this health hazard location after we arrived. My husband fortunately was able to quickly procure a vacuum and I was able to clean this highly neglected flooring. Much to my dismay, my fears were justified when the vacuum tank filled up, with the good Lord only knows what. There was BLOOD on the sheets! The deadbolt/ safety latch that is on the inside of a hotel door literally FELL OFF, just after a few nights. The iron was so filthy that it left a gigantic stain on my child’s shirt. While using the public laundry facilities on the second floor there was an active water leak from the ceiling and evidence of numerous past water leakage. So it is fair to say the health of the building (mold growth) may also be in question. While using the pool facilities: the pool room smelled slightly of sewage (from the pool bathroom) and the turnable door knob that you use to go into the pool room ALSO fell off because it appeared to be missing a screw. The entire establishment was disgusting, scar-ing, and embarrassing. Surprisingly, the few employees that I had interaction with were friendly and accommodating. Which makes me think that the insulting state of the hotel was due to management. Which is a shame because due to their airport shuttle, the hotel was constantly full of people. So I can only guess that no profit must be going back into the hotel and they are simply milking the establishment for whatever else they can get out of it before it falls down or is condemned. I post this not to be mean, or to get anyone in trouble, but to unbiasedly reveal the horror of our stay and to spare the next mother of small children heartache and headache.

Absolute worse stay I have had in a hotel. The parking lot was sketchy, there is people with Jack cars living in the hotel and storing theirs cars in it so there is not much parking. People are renting the rooms year round as tenants leaving not much room for hotel guests. There is messy rooms that look cluttered and well lived in with cats in the window even. At first glance the hotel looks decent. Then when you look closer it’s quiet gross. When I first walked up in a sketch part of anchorage being Halloween there’s causation tape outside. Walking in there is bloody sheets hanging from the counter as decorative piece for the holiday I hope. I walked in happy with my three girls and smiled saying “that’s creepy” the one male at the front desk looked up from his phone screen to notice us then looked back down at his phone ignoring my comment about the decorations. So I said “I’m checking in” He called the lady from the back and continued to just play on his phone. He was so rude and uninviting. We got checked in and went out to find parking. Hard to do for sure. We went in the room and immediately notice hair on the blankets, broken lamp shade, stain on carpets, walls, doors, dirty warm fridge, bathroom looks like it was lived in before. Spider came running out of the closet when we opened it. The night stand has a charging station on it full of sticky dust and hair. No pool towels. Only two tiny garbage cans might fit a couple soda bottles in it. The pool is small and only 4 1/2 feet deep but it’s better than none.

My husband and I were booked here as part of a vacation package, which we booked about 9 months ahead of time. We were really nervous when we started looking at reviews of the hotels we were booked at, because Wingate had consistent horrible reviews. Evidently, they bought out Comfort Inn and weren't honoring reservations that had been in place for months, so folks either had no place to stay or were having to shell out hundreds of more dollars to get a room there. Our reservation ended up being okay, which is why I gave them 3 stars, although I think it's bad form to price gouge people just because they can. The hotel itself was okay - definitely dated and not the cleanest, but not terrible. I did appreciate their free shuttle, although they should consider better marketing on the van. The piece of paper taped on the window of a white van looked sketchy, if you know what I mean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast was fair, although they really need to invest in a second waffle maker as there was always a long wait. The river behind the hotel was super cool, especially if you're into fishing. There's a man with a booth who will outfit you with everything you need for $100. Fairly close to the town proper, but there is a steep hill you would need to navigate if walking, although the shuttle will take you there pretty much whenever you ask. Overall, it wouldn't be a place I would choose to stay on my own, but it worked out for what we needed.

Absolutly Terrible! First Upon checking in we were told the Handicap room We had reserved was not available. They then put us on the 3rd floor. The ramp to the doors in Handicap were extremly icy. To the point that people who were not handicap were sliding on it. My Dad who uses a cane had to have people on ether side of hin not to fall. When telling front staff they said oh okay. And then we saw them throwing rocks out the front bit no one ever went to the back handicap doors and did anything. It was just as bad when we left. Thebroom was gross. there was food cups behind the nightstand and food. The outletbthat was on the night stand was covered in a sticky hairy film. My don found a "spider leg" aka a pubic hair on the bath tub. The bath tub was slippery. And the pool which was advertised as heated was very cold. and there way if heating it was running a hise from the bathrrom to the pool with hot water coming out of it. which one of the kids brushed up against and burnt there leg on hot water/metal ring around hose.. My son cut all 4 of his toes on the rough edges floor of the pool. The bottom of the pool felt like peat rocks in it ans when collecting to see qhat it qas it qas little piecws of the floor of the pool. but ot wasnt just a few it was scattered through out the bottom of it. the front desknhad no bandaismds when asked. Only one of the beds had a blanket on it the other had 2 sheets. There was 2 pods of coffee for the coffee maker but no sugar, cream, or stir sticks. When asking for a different room and a room with a jacuzzi tub as that is what we had originally reserved. (2 weeks in advance, but they didn't have ready.) We were told they wouldn't know which rooms had a jacuzzi tub and which don't) Then we were told that there were no other rooms available. Also breqkfast ended at a different time them was advertized on the website (however they did tell us at check in the time breakfast ends) The room was not clean and there was only one very small trash can with a tiny bag in it. Other guests had grocery bags of trash sitting outside there room doors. This place was very disappoiting. though the outside and front desk looked nice and inviting. The room was Not okay. And They advertize as having cable channels. However the remote said dish tv, but the only channels available were CNN and 2 sports channel. And they didn't even have away to stream any streaming subscriptions you may have. So my son and I had to watch a movie on my phone screen. :-( This place was absolutly rediculos and I would not recommend it to Anyone. Except maybe the...

Stay away from this hotel. We had 3 separate stays here as part of a vacation package through the Alaska Railroad. All reservations we set up were for 4 people, 2 rooms, 2 beds per room. We stayed 3 times here, two of the stays had severe issues:

First stay: There was a problem finding our reservation because this used to be a Quality or Comfort Inn that was bought by Wingate. This lead to a long wait time and several back and forths until we got our rooms. One of the rooms we stayed in on the 2nd floor had a broken window that was held together with clear packing tape. The door to the bathroom was broken as if someone had forcibly opened the door when it was locked. There was only 1 bath towel for 2 people in the room, so we had to get another. The next day when we got back, there was no new towels and we were told it was because they were short staffed. We had to find a housekeeping cart to grab a couple new ones. When we went down for the continental breakfast the following morning, all of the trash cans were overflowing.

Third stay: We show up and are given the keys to our rooms. We go up to the 3rd floor where our rooms are, and when we walk in, BOTH are single bed rooms. We go down to the front desk where the lady is super sweet and apologetic and she starts to resolve it. When the lady was helping us, she was constantly getting phone calls and having to put them on hold. We flagged the manager in the office behind the front desk to see if someone could help out because the one helping was swamped, there were 3 people in line behind us and several people on hold. The manager scoffed and had a terrible attitude about it and came out and only helped with 1 person in line and 1 phone call, that was it. When we were waiting for the room situation to be resolved, on a whim we confirmed they had us here for 2 nights, it turns out that they only had us down for one even though we had confirmations for two.

I'm writing this review from the chair inside the room after checking in on the 3rd stay, that is how terribly frustrated we are over this ordeal. This hotel has been an absolutely terrible experience on an otherwise great trip. We are going to be reaching out to the Railroad to express our displeasure as well with this particular location.

Overall, this is a poor joke...

Update: Contacted corporate Wyndham and quickly received a reply stating that they would refund us the overcharged amount. Wyndham corporate is willing to do the right thing---hopefully they will correct their franchisee.

New Hotel Management is simply dishonest. Like many, our group booked two rooms for the night before taking the Coastal Classic to Seward. We booked 9 months before our trip. Rooms were $207.80 per room including tax. Just prior to our trip, Choice Hotels emailed us to inform us that they no longer managed the hotel and could not guarantee the reservation; and they provided the telephone number for the new management for us to confirm with the new owners.

The new owners, Wingate, refused to honor the existing reservation, claiming Choice had not provided them with a list of confirmed reservations. I told them I would provide them with documentation of the reservation, but they still refused; and said blame Choice Hotels for it. Booking new reservations with Wingate now costed $422.86 per room including tax---$215.06 per room more than our original reservation. At this late of a date no other hotels remotely close to the train station were available for a better price.

When we arrived and checked in, the front desk clerk acted like she had never heard of this issue before---even though reviews for this hotel are now rift with the same story. While we were checking in, another guest came up to me and asked what was going on. Told us they had booked their stay around the same time as us and for the same train ride, but it was booked through Alaska Travel and Tour so the Wingate Inn honored the existing reservation for them.

So bottom line, management here will honor the reservations through a tour group because they don't want to lose all of the referral business through the tour group; but if you just booked a room yourself, they are happy to screw you over, and claim there is nothing they can do about it. Left messages for the hotel manager "David" with the front desk. Messages...
