Made a reservation for my significant other's birthday, wanted a whole night out on the town for our celebration. Sadly, Whiskey and Ramen was the worst part of our night :/ . They stuck us in the coldest most cramped corner of the restaurant, it was so loud we couldn't even sit across from each other to converse so i had to squeeze in next to her and another group on the patted wall seating just to talk. We are a younger looking couple so the waiter was extremely dismissive of us and seemed far more interested in larger groups he assumed would have larger tabs. Not an unreasonable position granted, but he definitely wasn't inclined to do more than the bare minimum for such a small group after acknowledging the special occasion. The "Small plates" (appetizers) were disappointing and the entrees weren't much better. After an hour, we just wanted to go, not even worth sticking around for a dessert. When I requested the check, for two people,(with two apps, two entrées, and two beers), the total was about $120, not terribly overpriced (If the food had been good). We payed in cash and tipped 30% since we both worked in the industry before, but, the way the server phrased his question of whether we needed change or not from the larger bills just made him sound slightly greedy and uncouth. If Whiskey and Ramen wants to represent themselves as a fine dining establishment, I would suggest better training for their wait staff. All and all, this place in just 80% atmosphere with a couple of shticks and gimmicks and some adequate Broth/Ramen at an acceptable price point... The majority of the rest of their dishes are just basic fare with frills and a slight Japanese twist which often doesn't come off in the dish. Probably won't return unless its for a business function were a larger group would warrant better service. Then again.. The location is on 4th, so there is a Massive homeless population in the summer that makes the area feel unsafe, so,...
Read moreMy wife and I have been wanting to stop here for a while, sadly we should have chose not to. From the pictures that I saw online regarding the atmosphere and the menu and the high prices I expected to come here to enjoy wonderful food and an excellent experience. Unfortunately that was not the case. We have been wanting to stop here for quite a while but never actually got the chance do it, due to the fact we never had time, but today we were out on a walk wearing t-shirts and shorts enjoying the beautiful weather that this summer was offering. Now we were in such a good mood we decided hey let's go stop at that restaurant we've been wanting to go to, sadly when we got there I imagine due to our form of dress we did not seem welcome. In fact they seem to be bothered by our presence. Now we didn't let that get to us, we ordered an appetizer of wings which were $13 for only six, a bowl of ramen which was $20, and a plate of skewers which were $25. Overall the food was just okay, the ramen was Bland, the skewers were quite decent but $25 for only two decent skewers seems like a bit of a rip-off. The best part of the meal were the wings, they were crispy and delicious, but sadly someone thought charging over $2 per piece was fair. In conclusion there are many excellent restaurants in the Anchorage area, and the prices are pretty fair, so don't go spending your hard-earned money on a restaurant that only offers decent food for an extraordinary premium price. If you do decide to stop in like we did, make sure you are dressed quite decently because if not chances are you will be judged. Maybe this was a one-time experience, but some of the other reviews I had read after eating here tell me this must be a common experience. Maybe I am wrong. If you have a decent amount of spare change feel free to blow it off here, now if you value your hard earned money and want to enjoy good food go somewhere else. Thank you...
Read moreAmbiance: Fanciest Ramen place I’ve ever been too
Service: We were a walk in upon opening for dinner and we were seated in 15minutes-ish at the bar area. If you really want to dine here, probably best to make a reservation as it was only available for bar seating on walk in. Bar service was great. The girl was attentive and nice. Was super nice sitting at the bar because we got to watch the chefs prep and make the dishes going out to the floor
Food: Alright let’s get into this! Keep in mind we are from Phoenix, Arizona and we have pretty good ramen so I might be a little tough.
Dark Horse: Good Noodles, Good Eggs, Fail on the Broth. The broth itself was very thick. I felt like I was sucking down Japanese curry. The quantity as well of the broth was at its minimum. In the photo you can see the bowl is barely filled. There simply just wasn’t enough broth in my opinion. I might be too traditional, but the pulled pork was just a little strange for me. I prefer my thick cut of chashu.
Tokyo Rich Tsukemen: Good noodles, Okay pork and Okay broth. Again, the broth was not amazing (didn’t warm my soul -haha) but better in its own right than the dark horse. The pork was better as it wasn’t pulled but the pork was also very crispy to the point of slightly burnt. If you look closely in the photo you can see the edges are tinted black.
Again, a little bias in the ramen opinions in our hometown, but this wouldn’t be a place I’d personally go back to for ramen especially for the price.
Giving a four star because (1) good service and beautiful ambiance. (2) the ramen was alright - maybe others would like it (3) we watched them prep some amazing look wagyu beef and i can only imagine those were...
