This is a must stop for Alaska information center/visitor center. This is a federal building, you must go through same procedure as all secure building, metal detectors, no knives or weapons. Once you get in the park ranger who facilitated gift shop also operate theatre will greet you. There are tons of info about each section of Alaska and wild life. it’s a self guided tour. It’s very cool to be in the historic building. It used to be post office before. There is a big section of how important ithis building is to anchorage. Unfortunately, around the building, there is no free parking available, only pay parking...

This is an excellent and free resource in Anchorage I would highly recommend you give it a look while in the area. Be aware you need to enter through security screening since this is a federal building but once you do you hve access to Rangers, beautiful wildlife displays, live webcames of bears in Katmai National Park, and a theatre showing rotating films and in our case a live discussion of Magpies with a rescue animal. There is also a gift shop and...

Let me start by saying this is a federal building, of course you will be searched, but the search is significantly easier than TSA. Divest your pockets and don't be a tool, and its painless! Inside, there are great exhibits about national parks, you can get your park passport stamped, get info about which parks to visit, and watch short films (that are gorgeous btw) In their quiet theatre. It's worth the trip if you have a little time...

Federal building so had to go through a metal detector but was very fast and no problem. A small free museum with lots of great info about the area and wildlife, free historical films, and a national park service ranger was there to answer questions and give information. It is across the street from where you can pick up the trolley if you want to do that. The museum is an easy walk from the captain cook hotel.
