Kumagoros has been in downtown Anchorage as long as I can remember. Japanese sushi places have come and go but this still remains. I hadn't been to it in years. My brother came for a visit this summer and both of us growing up in Japan, we decided to give it a try. Menu remains pretty much the same except for those crazy named rolls that have become so popular. Back in the day, things were much simpler and authentic in a sushi way. I wanted to try the ramen, it used to be so good. I was rather disappointed at how soft the noodles were, very over cooked. The broth was okay, not great...portions huge. My brother and the other members of our family all opted to get the katsu which is deep fried pork or chicken cutlet cut into strips. They do a great job with their deep fry and again the portions huge. My son got the katsu curry which gives you a small bowl of curry and again that was a disappointment. The Japanese have their own style of "curry" and it was not represented well. Overall the food was decent but not I want it again good. Anchorage needs a good...
Read moreWe had a very disappointing experience. Before our visit, we called to confirm the restaurant’s hours and were told the kitchen closes at 11:30pm and the restaurant at midnight. However, when we arrived, many items were unavailable. When I inquired about ordering sushi, the waitress told me their sushi kitchen closes at 9pm. I explained that I had called earlier and was told sushi was available until 11:30pm, and I’m fairly certain it was the same person I spoke to on the phone and who was now serving us. Despite this, she kept insisting the sushi kitchen closes at 9pm and even said, “don’t yell at me,” though I was speaking calmly and simply explaining what I was told.
We ended up ordering fried rice, which was extremely oily and didn’t taste freshly prepared. We also asked for an extra plate to share, and she seemed confused, repeating “a plate?” before eventually bringing us a small saucer, which was surprising.
Overall, it was not a good experience and definitely not worth the price. If you have other dining options, I would strongly recommend...

I got the Shoyu Ramen. I was kinda sad that it doesn’t come with egg in the ramen already, but when you order an egg as an addition it comes with two halves! That’s top notch right there honestly bc other places give you 1/2 and that’s sh!t. The eggs were just 🤌 melt in your mouth and I’m glad I ordered two. Honestly the quickest I’ve finished a bowl of ramen in a long time.
They also met my indicator that of a place will give you a side of butter when asked then their ramen stands a much higher chance at being great. If you don’t put butter in your ramen I highly recommend it. Seriously. It won’t help bad ramen taste better it only helps improve the creaminess really but it just slaps.
I got the dragon roll, and let me tell you that unagi on top was the best. The roll itself may have been a little loose but overall the roll was delicious and made me make that sound. You KNOW what I’m talking about.
The only thing that would make this place better would be having Tonkotsu ramen on the menu. Otherwise it’s top, idc...
