I decided not to go to the KC Rep's production of "A Christmas Carol" this year as I have found the Rep's latest use of technology, within the Carol's production, has taken away from the warmth of the story-line. So, this season I opted to try something new; local entertainment at the Atchison Theater's production of "It's a Wonderful Life." I enjoyed the clever mise-en-scène and the "heart" of the play, which showcased the emotional struggle between George Bailey and Old Man Potter, and sometimes, even the struggle within themselves. The balanced delivery of their lines with the silence in-between, action and inaction, were very impressive. Well done, gentlemen! In addition, each character - some with multiple roles - were able to fully step-out and allow their character to shine from the exposition until the final scene when George comes home after his epiphany with Clarence the Angel (who also did a great job in his role!) and is surrounded with loving family and friends. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of physical theatre towards the end. Lots of action and no wonder some of the characters were panting in the end. It was a warm production which left one feeling happy, with the desire to walk up to Clarence and give him a pat on the back saying, "well done Angel! Congrats on the new wings!"
