Atchison Museum and Visitor Center next door to the Rail Museum 🚂 is another great spot to stop. Many maps and information about the area to eat or see. The Rail Museum has an outdoor steam engine that you can climb up into the cab and really see what it is like. There are also many freight cars like box, flatbeds and other to see at the Rail Museum. This museum has no indoor area just the outside but if your a train fan it’s a nice place to stop. The visitor center though has some history about trains, wars, technology, Indians as brief history of how Atchison was shaped. #adventureswithkids #kcdaytrip #daytripsfromkc #historymuseum #localhistory

The Atchison Area Visitor Center and train yard offer a charming and nostalgic glimpse into America's rich railway history. Located in the historic Atchison train depot, the visitor center provides friendly, informative staff and a wealth of exhibits that highlight the significance of railroads to the region. The train yard itself is a delightful attraction, featuring vintage locomotives and railcars that visitors can explore up close, making it especially appealing for families and train enthusiasts. The center also offers informative displays about the history of the Missouri Pacific Railroad and the city’s development, immersing visitors in the local heritage. The surrounding grounds are well-maintained, providing a picturesque setting for photographs and leisurely walks. Additionally, the center often hosts special events, train rides, and educational programs that enhance the visitor experience. Accessibility is good, with ample parking and clear signage. Overall, the Atchison Area Visitor Center and train yard blend history, education, and entertainment, making it a must-visit destination for those interested in railroad history or seeking a family-friendly outing. Its authentic charm and engaging exhibits leave a lasting impression, celebrating Atchison's vital role in America's railway legacy.

Super fun place to stop! We bought stuff in the gift center and walked thru the museum that's attached which was super interesting and had lots of stuff on display. Then my son got to experience the older train caboose which he was thrilled with!
