The monument is a stunning one to look at. What may be lost on the average vistor to Piedmont Park is its placement as part of a re-imagining of many different public monuments and spaces across Atlanta that have been historically associated with the Confederacy and subsequent cultural vision of the Lost Cause. I deeply appreciated the work that went into the panels next to the monument, which talk more about historical meaning of the monument and rethought public meaning in the current re-emergence of white nationalism by the city.
