Its a nice way to spend an hour or two in downtown Augusta. There is a good variety of history to this area, and the museum is well laid out to make it easy to navigate. The thing that stuck out the most to me was how under represented the history of slavery was — there were a total of two display cases. Only one of which held an actual artifact. The only other representation was in a man who was a master potter, and he happened to be a slave. It was an after thought. There was a large display of artifacts from when the city was split into white side and black side — the artifacts are all from the black side of town where there were signs that said “no whites”, etc. There were no artifacts from segregation or Jim Crow laws, so it definitely gives the vibe of white sympathy. It’s a small place that’s air conditioned and has free parking, so it’s not a bad place to get out of the sun for a minute. There seems to be a lot of school trips, so just be...
Read moreLove this place! It's so affordable (4$ for 6 & up, FREE under 6yrs). I take my son a few times a year and pay 4$ so he can climb inside the authentic train car, trolley, and river boat. He loves pretending to drive the gold cart and I love reading about the different parts of Augusta history each time we go. I'm still finding new information 2 years later! It's very clean and well presented, with different areas for different eras. All the way from prehistoric times to modern golfing history and everything in between. The people who work there are so above and beyond helpful and friendly too. When we first moved here, the lady at the information desk told us all about Augusta suburbs, school zones, restaurants, attractions, local business, and more. She gave us a bag full of helpful pamphlets and brochures too. We take visitors to the museum all the time too- especially since it's right across the street from the Riverwalk and riverboat ride...
Read moreI wasn't expecting a lot, but this place was so much fun. It was a lot bigger than I expected, with a large and varied collection. I really appreciate how interactive everything was. They made sure to tell us when we came in that you can get inside the passenger train car! There is a history theater, and exhibits spanning topics from native Americans to 21st century musicians. Black history is included here! I highly recommend it, especially if you are into golf. I enjoyed sending pics of the Masters jacket to my golf-playing family. I think the thing that impressed me most was the amount of interaction between US presidents and Augusta! My kids (ages 7-12) aren't super into history, but we spent two hours here. Admission in August is only a dollar! There are sizeable bathrooms, a water fountain, elevator to the second floor, and wonderful air conditioning. If you found this review helpful, please give it a...
