taste, service, quality, and value. Cake and cheesecake slices are around $10 but are more like two generous sized portions.
This is a review of the cheesecake. I suspect I'll be back to review other desserts and the food.
When they say they make real, New York style cheesecake - believe them!
We stopped by an hour or so before closing to pick up dessert to go. The regular cakes were almost gone but even the remaining slice here or there looked fresh and not at all dry. Other customers gave wide-grinned, knowing looks or pointed out their favorites.
The cheesecakes were more whole. They were cool but not overly refrigerated - so you got the full flavor immediately - it wasn't blunted by being too cold.
With one glance these cakes looked like the real deal - straight up New York style cheesecake. After getting it home, it did not disappoint. We tried the death by chocolate. Yes, it was chocolatey but not overdone, stupidly chocolate, if you know what I mean. It was just right.
The cake looked gorgeous. It had a hint of burnish on the rounded edge and the middle sunk in a bit. It might've been around 3" high. There was a sliver of chocolate cookie crust on the bottom for good measure - just enough to let you know it was there - not a shelf you had to break through or enough to get in the way of the star of the show. Plus, it was melded with the cake - it didn't break away. They'd sprinkled some mini chocolate chips on the top.
The texture was perfect. Perfect! It couldn't have been any better. You know how when you order what's described as NY cheesecake and, as soon as you put your fork in it, you know it's not but you still try fooling yourself that it might be real because you really, really want to believe that this is what you've been hunting for all these years...but it's not? Boll Weevil's cheesecake is the exact opposite. We stuck our forks in it and had to tamp down the hope welling up that this might finally be the one. It was! This cake had the ideal mix of physical crumble when you forked through it, and substantial creaminess when you ate the bite. It wasn't a blah, smooth creaminess. The best I can come up with is that it was a substantial creaminess. You knew it was there - you had plenty of time to feel the transformation from its outside texture to when it melted away inside your mouth.
This Death by Chocolate cheesecake tasted just right. Most importantly - it wasn't too sweet; it had the ideal amount of tanginess. For us, it wasn't too, too chocolatey. In fact, the best part of the taste was that you could still taste the base cheesecake underlying the...
Read moreMy review: saying bye to the best cake ever
Let me first say the Tropical Dream (Pineapple Coconut) cake is the best cake I have ever had! But unfortunately I will not be returning to get it again. Boll Weevil has great food and even better desserts; however the customer service may need a little work. In my personal experience, I believe that people of color are tolerated but not really welcomed.
Here is my experience; my husband and I found Boll Weevil by chance one weekend on our random weekend trips and on first entering we were stared at like we were at the wrong place. We waited a lengthy amount of time before anyone said anything to us. The restaurant wasn’t packed but the servers passed us a few times, looked and didn’t say anything. Is it me or has anyone had that experience before when you walked in somewhere and felt immediately uncomfortable. Me being the optimistic one, brushed it off and told my husband they are prob just busy let’s give it shot. We were finally noticed and sat at a table. Our waiter was cordial but barely. We got a few looks from the servers who walked by hurriedly. But again we shook it off and enjoyed the food. The food came fast and was really good. We ordered desert and it was great! I couldn’t finish it so I took it back to the room to finish and wanted to go back to get a slice to take back home but because of the bad aura we felt we decided not to return.
Then yesterday we were in Augusta again for a trip and I asked my husband to give it another shot since it had been a while since our first time. Maybe that was a bad day for them. He begrudgingly agreed. We received the same dry welcome and treatment as before, our waitress who was cordial but it felt like she had to be not like we were really welcomed. I told my husband as much as I LOVE their Tropical Dream, he was right and my dream was over. I noticed the treatment of other guests who were not of color and how we were treated so we won’t be returning.
Just for clarification in case anyone is wondering, my husband and I are Information Technology (IT) professionals and retired military from the Warner Robins area. We have traveled a lot and been a patron of many establishments and believe in tipping well for the service we received.
I’m writing this review in hopes the owner will review and will have a honest conversation with their employees. I read the history of how Boll Weevil came about on the menu and it is very loving story that represents the love of the area and the ppl. I would hope that approach would be shown to...
Read moreI was really excited to try this restaurant and was super disappointed. The prices were so high that I thought the food would be better. We got the lobster bisque which was pretty good but it only came with two crackers and if you wanted more then you would need to pay pretty heavily (for crackers) for more. The service was good. Our server was polite and attentive. My real disappointment though was the shrimp and grits. It was over 18.00 so I was hoping that it would be delicious. I have had this dish before many times and I think that the menu described the dish the way I expected it to be served with toppings of onions, and bell peppers, and ham/ bacon. When it came however it was literally just the most plain grits I have ever eaten, 5 shrimp, cheese and some creole seasoning. The only thing that saved the food for me was that they had drowned my husband’s pasta so deep in sauce that I was able to borrow 4 or 5 spoons of it to put on the grits. I was really expecting more for an almost 20.00 dish and it really was a disappointment for the build up that I have gotten from the reviews. Everything else we had was fine but again the prices didn’t really match the quality that I was expecting. I hope that this is helpful to someone else who may be expecting what it describes on the menu and maybe prevent someone else from spending almost 20 bucks on a bowl of .50 grits and 5.00 with of shrimp. With .5 of cheese over it. We skipped getting a cake which if you buy it in the restaurant is approximately 80+ dollars. We may come back to the bakery for one of those just to try it because all of the reviews mention the cake but I would not be back for the...
