I was a vendor for the black mermaid event last week. The center is a beautiful structure. The event was awesome, and the vendors were all so talented!

I was very much looking forward to the Beaufort Lecture Series, 5 Centuries of History. After reading the USCB COVID safety policies, I felt assured that although it would be a large group indoor event, measures were being taken to keep the community safe . I was shocked at a completely full auditorium without spacing but more concerned that masks were not worn. There was no announcement made to reinforce the mask policy but more importantly, those running the program were sitting in the front rows, in full view of everyone without a mask on.The tone was set and people throughout the audience felt they were given permission to remove their own masks. Events like these are a gift and a privilege we have had to do without for the past few years. If everyone gathers together safely, we can continue to have these events. Wearing masks during a pandemic in a packed, fully enclosed venue with little air circulation canโ€™t be optional. And certainly shouldnโ€™t be encouraged. Furthermore, this group are guests of the USCB community and should be expected to honor their policies and facilities. Their actions jeopardize everyone not only at this event but at any other group...
