Home place of Alexander Black, Founder of Blacksburg. For many years, a very fine Funeral Home, and center of Blacksburg Society - Yes, we do have Old Society, still here! The Draper Road/Preston Avenue is an example of the Old Guard faculty that once led VPI. Take your time to reflect on what Blacksburg must have been like a century ago. The Alexander Black House has been restored to its former Victorian glory, and had been moved one block west to Draper Road. Unfortunately the house was closed for tours the day we stopped by due to employees needing to monitor parking for the football game. But the very kind lady who saw me peeking forlornly through the window graciously opened the door and showed us some photos of the place and told us a little about the house's history. Her affection for the place was palpable, and I can't wait to come back to tour the place properly. It's simply gorgeous on the outside, and from what I could see of the interior it too...
