I normally don't write reviews unless I have had a pretty bad experience or a pretty amazing one. This review is because I had an amazing experience with a couple of family members at The Blacksburg Tavern last night (9/5).
I am actually upset with myself that I have been sleeping on this gem of a restaurant. A great friend couldn't stop talking about how good the fried chicken was. Because of that recommendation, I had some of the best fried chicken that I have had in a very long time. I got the fried chicken plate. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the breading was crunchy and seasoned perfectly. I got a breast and a wing with mashed potatoes and green beans. If it were socially acceptable, I would have licked the plate after finishing the mashed potatoes. The green beans....chef kiss. Oh and the cornbread! If you like sweet cornbread, you will love theirs. All of that delicious food, and a drink for under $20 before the tip!
One family member ordered the fried chicken plate with their pimento mac and cheese. When we were leaving they said that, that was the best meal that they have had out in a very long time. The other family member ordered the meatloaf sandwich with the pimento mac and cheese. They had leftovers and were pretty excited to have it for lunch today.
I can not recommend The Blacksburg Tavern enough. The service was amazing, and the owner checked on us and thanked us multiple times for coming in. This restaurant will now be in a my rotations of favorite places.
They should offer a chicken and cornbread tailgate box! They would sell so many of...
Read moreWe always try to eat here whenever visiting Blacksburg. The owner always comes to check on you at some point. He’s so personable and easy to talk to. The food is wonderful. As my husband always says, his only complaint is that everything is so good that it’s hard to decide what to order! I usually order an Aunt Ginny (Jim Beam and ginger ale) and fried chicken. My husband usually gets the meatloaf. Our favorite sides are pimiento mac and cheese, green beans, and baked apples. We didn’t get any dessert today but it’s always delicious, too. The place has a cool Appalachian vibe with mountain music playing, as well as beautiful murals of local scenes from years past (done by the owner’s late great-aunt) and old area photos. It’s always a treat to be here and it’s easy to see why it is our VT kids’ favorite restaurant.
Edited 6/21/25 to add: We ate here tonight after the Downtown Sundown 5k (part of the summer solstice festival). We didn’t realize how close it was to closing and had absolutely no idea until I asked toward the end of the meal. They could not have been more kind and genuinely happy to have us there. My daughter remarked to me later that in all the years we’ve eaten here, it suddenly struck her that every single time, it’s the owner who greets and seats us, making us feel so welcome. You can tell how much he cares about his tavern and his customers, and the attitude carries over to the rest of the staff as well. Tonight’s dinner really hit the spot for these two tired, hungry runners… physically and mentally! Thank you,...
Read moreAbsolutely one of the best restaurants I have eaten at. The food was superb, the waitress was amazing, greeted at the door by the owner, and the renovated house is fabulous.
We saw this restaurant on a Facebook post advising that they were going on vacation, so come see them. Along with this post was the most sumptuous looking plate of fried chicken, green beans, and mashed potatoes. So, we decided to try it while we were out... and I do not regret that decision at all.
I had The Gobbler, a bowl full of shredded fried chicken, topped with mashed potatoes and chicken gravy, pimento mac and cheese, and green beans. It was serendipity in a bowl - so very delicious. My husband had The Hungry Hokie, a bowl that starts out with meatloaf and topped with the same as The Gobbler. I love meatloaf and am skeptical to get it at restaurants, but I will definitely try the meatloaf in the plate version - the bite I had of my husband's left me wanting more. Oh... and the biscuits, light and fluffy, and the cornbread could have been dessert...like cake, so delicious
For dessert, we shared the peach pie. It was my least favorite of the entire meal, but that could be because I had eaten so much of my meal (and had half to take home - that's how much it was - my husband did finish his). I think next time I will try the brownie with ice cream.
We are already making plans to come back with our parents and trying the...
