Currently undergoing a major renovation after getting so old that the roadbed was literally wearing away. Thanks to the inept leadership of former MassDOT chief Stephanie Pollack, pedestrians and cyclists were, as usual, thought of last: there is a way-too-narrow walkway on the west side of the temporary bridge for pedestrians and cyclists to use. At the narrowest point, just before the stairs and the Converse building, the walkway is only 1.5 m wide! Whoever did the pedestrian/cyclist counts while the old bridge was still open needs a few rounds of electroshock! First of all, you're combing what was TWO walkways of the old bridge (one on either side) into ONE, and then you have to take into account 1) Businesspeople walking going back and forth to work from Charlestown and the North End. 2) HUNDREDS of children and parents going back and forth from Charlestown to the two schools in the North End. 3) HUNDREDS of tourists who ALSO stop frequently mid-bridge to take picture and/or catch their breath. 4) Through commuters like myself on a bike where your options are to either mix it up with groups 1-3 or ride in traffic with NO SHOULDER across the bridge. Let's hope the finished project "sometime in 2023" is true to its goal of providing ADEQUATE walking/cycling/bus lanes, but I'm certainly not...

Este puente, anteriormente conocido como North Washington Street Bridge, fue oficialmente renombrado en octubre de 2024 como William Felton "Bill" Russell Bridge en honor al legendario jugador de los Boston Celtics y activista por los derechos civiles, Bill Russell.
