I had been very excited to go here, having some knowledge and interest about the history of the railway, how it was built, and how Cheyenne came to be a central railroad hub. However, this museum had roughly one misspelled plaque glossing over that particular point in history. The remainder covered such topics as; details of rebuilding the depot building itself, histories of many of the Union Pacific managers, a lot of folks' uniforms, and a buttload of toy trains. Maybe two buttloads. The entire upstairs in fact. I love history. And learning new facts. I was so very bored in this museum, keeping focus only to find the many spelling and grammar mistakes in the various displays. Most of the other things designed to keep my focus, the various interactive exhibits, were broken. The highlight was spending a quarter to watch the first of the great many toy trains do a little loop above our heads. It was mostly downhill from there, with a little spark of hope when we got to play on the giant freight scale. Maybe give this one a pass, unless you're super into toy trains, in enough case set aside a lot of time to marvel at all the details of the model train line upstairs and find all the tiny woodland creatures in...
Read moreAwesome Union Pacific Railroad Depot converted, like so many, to a local Museum. Quite a few nice exhibits with history of railroading is a in this area and how the railroad and Cheyenne came to be
Some great information on the Union Pacific railroads including the big boy and other locomotives as well as history of the railroad and its development.
There is a wooden model of u p Big Boy 404 that is so exact in detail it is hard to believe that the fellow created out of wood. All moving Parts move and are to scale! Model is about 4 feet long.
Very nice Narrow Gauge h o model railroad is upstairs recreating a Narrow Gauge line of the era. The entire model railroad is HOn3, unusual gauge for this large and magnificent a model railroad. Lots of trestles turns mines Mills and reasons for the railroad exist along the railroad route.
I do not remember the actual length of the railroad but it seemed like it was at least for 500 ft long all told.
The nicest Narrow Gauge h o railroad exhibit I've ever seen!
If you're in to railroads this is an absolute must museum for railroads. For model railroads...
Read moreIt was a wonderful day in Cheyenne, WY. We got to see multiple real trains go by outside the depot and to my surprise there is a real train inside the depot that's been taken apart and put back together. I got to take some pictures outside and then we found the out there was a small store just before the museum. My husband bought me a pair of Jade earrings, & we looked around inside, & found, the only way to go any further is to to pay to get into the Museum. It's $8 for adults, $7 for seniors or military, and children under 12 are free. Once we paid, I took 100's of pictures inside the museum, however those are for my memory, alone, because, I was told, all pictures on the outside could be posted, but, any from the inside should not be posted, that's why they need to come & pay the fee. It's how they stay opened. However, we had so many enjoyable experiences that brought us back to when we were young. There are so many things in the museum that, not only brings you back to a time of the railroads, but also to everything else that was happening during that same time...
