Annual Secret Garden Show at Macy's State Street A few years ago, I discovered that 3 Macy's Flagship Stores host an Annual Themed Garden Show in their San Fran, NY & Chicago locations. In prior years the Garden Show has been located on the 7th floor at their State Street location. I haven't attended the show for a few years and decided to make it a date with the hubby to visit the Flower Show. It's completely complimentary ;) Macy's has made a few changes since I attended, it is no longer on the 7th floor but, the Flowers are intertwined amid their 1st floor sales counters. Not sure I like the new location: On the 7th floor, the flowers were at eye level and one could take selfies and the displays were more intricate. There were one or two displays located on the "floor" this year but, most were located several feet above the sales counters, making it hard to appreciate the displays. However, there were more flower displays on each floor incorporating that department into the display: Women's, men's, children's, etc. Making your ride up or down the escalator artfully interesting. The inter active activities were increased. On the day we visited, they were giving out a complimentary succulent with a Macy's purchase, additional complimentary activities included: build your own terrarium, pour a candle, cooking demo, candy, hair braided with glitter dust. Each year's theme is different. 2019's theme was Journey to Paradisios, a cosmic space adventure. Super Cool! Macy's does not really advertise the Flower Show, you kinda have to keep an eye out for it. It only lasts for 2 weeks and then it's gone. It's usually the last week of March and 1st week of April, again completely complimentary. Book your SpotHero space, or use Macy's CASH only valet service located on Wabash Street for $15. Have Lunch on the 7th floor which offers a Food Court filled with several dining options. They now offer Macy's lunch for $7! YEP, enjoy a warm Turkey, brie & cranberry sandwich on cinnamon raisin bread with chips for only $7! YUM

Macy's on State Street, formerly known as Marshall Field's, is a historic gem in the heart of Chicago. Stepping inside feels like taking a journey through time, with its grand architecture and rich heritage. The moment you walk through those iconic doors, you're greeted with a sense of nostalgia and excitement. One of my favorite parts of Macy's is the Walnut Room. It's more than just a dining area; it's a cherished tradition for many Chicagoans. The ambiance is elegant yet inviting, with its stunning walnut woodwork and cozy atmosphere. And let's talk about the chicken pot pie – it's simply divine! Rich, creamy, and bursting with flavor, it's the epitome of comfort food. Every bite is a reminder of why Macy's on State Street holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Beyond the Walnut Room, Macy's offers an unparalleled shopping experience. From high-end designer brands to everyday essentials, there's something for everyone. The customer service is exceptional, with knowledgeable staff always on hand to assist. Overall, Macy's on State Street is more than just a department store – it's a Chicago institution. Whether you're enjoying a meal at the Walnut Room or browsing the latest fashion trends, Macy's never fails to impress. It's a timeless destination that continues to capture the magic of the Windy City.

Having lived in several major cities where Macy's has taken over grand old department store buildings, I can say when Macy's shows up, you can pretty much accept the fact that an era has ended. I see some glowing reviews here, perhaps coming from people that don't realize what "used to be". This is true of the State St. Chicago location (as well as the Wanamaker building in Philadelphia). I unfortunately never got to visit Marshall Field's prior to the change. I did visit the new Macy's not too long after the take over. At that time, the store still felt kinda festive, but I could tell some of the grandeur was already gone. Now, in 2022, the store is but a whisper of what it once was. Granted, Covid played a big part...and traffic in the store still isn't back up to "exciting" yet. I have some ideas about what's going on. I don't think the location is a destination as it once was for city dwellers. Because downtown is changing rapidly, there also isn't the type of foot traffic there once was, from people converging on the loop for work. So a lot of the customers are visitors, or maybe residents who happen to have made the trip down. Retail is also quickly changing, and the department store as an icon is dwindling. But a lot of it has to do with Macy's itself. I happened to work at the Herald Square location in the 80s and THAT was still an exciting place (not so much anymore). I also worked for Macy's again in the early 2000s in King of Prussia, PA. That's when I realized how bland the company had gotten. Presentation, the type of employees, and general atmosphere all have gone to pot. At State St. even, once you leave the main floor, some of the employees are dressed like they're going to a picnic, not selling "finer retail". Plus, Macy's pretty much stretched themselves too thin, placing multiple stores within short distances. The Water Tower/Michigan Ave. store has had to close. That being said...the building as an architectural feature is still amazing. Please do some reading about the history of Marshall Field's and the eventual residency of the store in this location. Do take time to view the amazing "Tiffany Dome" that was designed by Tiffany himself. And yes...they still have a "bargain basement" where you can find incredible markdowns, although it's on the 2nd floor (well, men's is). AND...one of the few stores that still has an extensive candy dept!!! I will say that Macy's also is one of the only chains that WILL put in good effort to decorate for Christmas...

I bought a shirt today with a gift card I received for Xmas. The cashier was very nice but completely incompetent when it came to ringing me up and applying the gift card. She kept trying to get me to swipe my credit card for the amount of the gift card. I tried explaining to her that the gift card should take $50 off and I’d be left paying the $26 difference. I wouldn’t typically complain about such a silly thing while folks’ houses are literally burning down in California but I was standing there feeling weird for like 10 mins. Anyways. After standing there sweating my balls off bc it’s freezing in Chicago so I was bundled up but standing in the hot store getting anxious I started sweating. She ended up figuring it out and I left. I got home to throw said shirt into the wash to wear to the function I purchased it for only to find the dang security tag still on it. I was gonna attempt to take it off myself but idk if it’s an ink one or if I will get shards of plastic blown into my eyes if I try and force it off. So gotta go back to the store for them to take this thing off. Again this lady was SO nice but holy hell, management, get them some training.
