I went to Travis Hardware for galvanized 1" steel pipe for a porch railing to match an existing one for a old home on Fernwood street in Rockledge. I spoke with a man named Nick, their supposed ace pipe guy. I gave him drawings and showed him pictures of the porch in great detail. 8 straight pieces of 1'' galvanized pipe, the longest being 50". And 17 fittings. No big deal. I am not an artist but he made some adjustments and we figured out a parts list and got the ball rolling. He then told me that 1 fitting needed to be ordered. It would be around the end of the week. That was on Monday, June 1st. The next day he called and said the middle rail would have to be omitted due to it weakening the railing. (? Really?) This is pipe. Anyway, I said fine please get all my pipe and the fittings together so I can at least get some of it started. Nick said he couldn't do that because he needed to pre-assemble it for fit. (? Really?) So he needed that one fitting. I think Nick probably is most comfortable just cutting and threading pipe. Helping out with design work seemed to really fluster him. I said ok again and he told me he would call me on Thursday. Fine. No call on Thursday or Friday. They are closed on weekends without so much as an answering machine for the courtesy of letting people know their operating hours. The phone just rings and rings. Not everyone can Google information. Today is June 9th. I just spoke with Nick and he said they cannot find the fitting anywhere. He did however tell me another way we could do it. It just would not be as clean a look. He never apologized for the call he never made. I told my customer I would be calling him at the end of the week with some more information. Thanks again Nick! No info, No call. I asked to speak with the buyer and I think his name was J.B or J.D.. He sounded ok. I asked him where he was searching and who normally sells them. There are hundreds if not thousands of fittings in the back. He told me. I said I would look but nin the mean time Have Nick go ahead with the rest of the order. Thank you. Nick called back and said they were not interested anymore, told me to find a railing company and hung up the phone. How nice, and mature, that was from a company that has been in business since 1885, THEIR GRANDPARENTS ARE ROLLING OVER IN THEIR GRAVES!!! I have been doing business with them since 1975. I have sent many people to them over the years. They took offense that I was going to look for a part they said they could not FIND. I am an American and I don't give up easy, sometimes you have to take the ball and run with it yourself. Do yourselves a favor and go to the big home improvement stores and save some $'s, At least do a price comparative before purchasing from Travis Hardware in Cocoa Village, Fla. They are very pricey!
Ok, so I had a problem with Nick. I wasted almost 2 weeks with them. I found what I needed on line in 5 minutes. MUCH less expensive. Also Lowes cuts and threads pipe for FREE!!!!!!! Pipie is just not that inexpensive anywhere but shop around you will find differences. As far as the center rail, Nick said would not be possible due to weakness, well he was wrong again and it turned out beautiful and very sturdy. The customer is happy and so am I and I will continue to boycott Travis hardware and pass this info on to as many people as possible. Thank you, Thank...
Read moreNeed a "Flux capacitor"? Mac behind counter will ask you if "you need that in Chrome or black? Metric or American thread? Then he will send one (or two) of the 5 guys standing there to take you to it! Then when they've gotten you EXACTLY what you needed that you couldn't find on the internet, they hand write up your ticket.
During this process they will ask you if you're from out of town and how long you're staying. Or if he has seen you once before he will address you by name, ask how your father is doing and will INSIST on GIVING your 3 year old son a small $.99 American flag proudly displayed by the regester that he had been playing with.
To all those who say they're over priced.... I say you cannot put a price on this kind of service. And don't go there to buy fertilizer stupid, go there when you need a left hand thread screw for a window regulator made in the 50's.... they will have it, in 3 different finishes!!
This is your local "barber shop" atmosphere with service that's just not...
Read moreI purchased a couple Milwaukee power tools from them only to find out the batteries were faulty and would not hold a charge. I called to inform them thinking this would be a simple thing to resolve, I was wrong on that assumption. I showed up in person to further the conversation only to be met with suspicion like I was trying to rip them off, how they came to that conclusion baffles me because I was the one spending cash. After they insulted me and questioned my character multiple times, I would not give them the reaction they were fishing for. In the end I got my replacement battery. FYI that was a two week process for something they had in stock the entire time. This place has been around for a very long time, I respect and admire the dedication they have had for the community. However I do not condone the way they handled...
