I have limited experience a the Missouri Theatre as a venue I was assigned during the True/False Flim Festival in 2015.
The restoration is beautiful! As I don't live in Columbia now (I did many years ago), I am unaware of the politics surrounding the cost of the restoration and MU's involvement.
What I see is a theatre with unobstructed views from every seat, great acoustics - even when the music is a band on the stage, not a movie with sound delivered via a mixing board. I felt privileged to work at this venue of the Festival even more than others. The history is palpable, it's as if the building has a spiritual profile.
