After restlessly shopping for a futon we could not find anything in our price range with the quality we were looking for. We shopped Target, Big Lots, Sears, JcPenny and even Amazon and for one reason or another could not comfortably purchase anything without a feeling in our gut that it would be harshly missing the quality mark.
Okay, so I've driven by The Futon Shop probably more times than I can count and wondered how a place like that (so speciality) stays in business with all the competition by big box retailers.
Since we started talking about purchasing a Futon for our new house, I wanted to go to The Futon Shop from the start. However, I avoided it so much because of the negative reviews I have read about this location in particular.
Exhausted from spending the entire day bouncing from store to store and coming up empty handed, we decided to go and see for ourselves just how bad the customer services is these days.
We showed up pretty close to closing but never felt rushed. We were taught everything about each option we were showed. Were offered history of the company and the product quality and at the end of the day, we had a fantastic experience here! Our sales rep was Casey, he was quirky, upbeat, and genuine.
My fiancé and I were impressed by Casey's customer service, he was easy to talk to and did not try to size up our pocketbooks. He did not try to pressure us and was patient and respectful throughout the entire transaction. The best part is that he was REAL with us. He even stayed late and made small talk while I changed my mind 20 times (as someone who sold electronics in the past, I knowwww how frustrating that can be) but he was very patient.
I was also impressed by the quality of the products, the store layout and how many options they offer! My fiancé was concerned with comfort and I was more concerned with looks and material they had so many options that we had no trouble finding the best of both worlds.
We did end up purchasing a super comfortable futon mattress from The Futon Shop and we are super happy with our purchase. Casey even helped us play Tetris with the mattress to get it into my Civic because we really wanted to take it home today.
We were also taught by Casey how to care for our mattress once we got it home. For example how it needs to breathe for 24 hours so the cotton can open up and how it can mold if left on the ground for too long.
We could never have expected this type of customer service or quality from a big box retailer. I know this place had some negative reviews but it seems like the owner did some training and adjusting because our experience in comparison to the reviews was black and white. It was a pleasure for us to support a small business and I look forward to our next Futon...
Read moreI am so delighted by my Shiki futon mattress purchase with wool and organic cotton stuffing, not for a futon, but for an antique rope bed used by my ancestors in the early 1800s. Now we can now start using the antique bed again (see photo)! The bed frame was sitting in a closet for decades (probably 100 years! Literally!) and I assumed I could never use it again without having a place to source a traditionally made mattress. But then I suddenly realized that a futon mattress would work! But I didn’t want synthetic materials. I wanted stuffing that my ancestors would have used, like wool, cotton, goose down, and straw (though I can live without the straw!). And to my great additional delight, the Futon Shop agreed to make a custom size for my antique bed measurements that is not the modern standard mattress size (similar to a 3 quarter mattress size but slightly shorter—people were smaller back then!). I want to thank Karol and the rest of the team at the Futon Shop for being so accommodating to my needs for this mattress! We’ve had 9 generations here at my family’s old farmstead in upstate NY, and as someone who values restoring every detail of my precious old farmhouse, this is an incredible addition. If only they had ticking fabric for the cover! But I still count my blessings on this purchase. Thank you, Futon Shop! Please market your custom cotton/wool beds to other people like me who want historic mattresses but without centuries of mold haha! Facebook has lots of groups for people who love historic replicas of old items, like Early New England Homes. :) Just source ticking fabric for the mattress cover. :) Bless you Futon Shop...
Read moreTERRIBLE COMPANY - Years ago, my husband and I purchased 2 futons from The Futon Shop. Both mattresses were very comfortable and nontoxic. Apparently, under current management, The Futon Shop has become a corrupt, chaotic, terrible company. When we went to place the order, a guy from the San Francisco store was so rude, we hung up and called another part of the state to place the order. We ordered a mattress and, after sleeping on the mattress for one night, found it to be very poorly made and completely unusable. The springs dug into our backs. The mattress is uneven and lumpy. We both woke up in pain. We have made numerous attempts to arrange for a return. We spoke with Edith, who first tried to force us to keep the mattress and refused the refund saying, "It's not our policy to refund." (This is a policy that is used by companies whose products are ongoingly poorly made.) When Edith realized we would not roll over, she said she would have someone reach out to us. That person was to come to our home to inspect the mattress and to work with us on the return. We've never heard from said person. We've made three additional attempts to contact Edith. She refuses to reply to our communications. Edith/ The Futon Shop is trying to force us to keep a terribly made, useless mattress. They refuse to refund our $1200. We've had to file complaints with the CA Attorney General's Office. Very bad experience. UPDATE: Fortunately, we paid for the mattress with a credit card. My credit card company did a thorough investigation and found cause to...
