I took enough notes of my negative experiences living here to write a novel, which no one would read. Instead, let me summarize it in the resident manager's own words:
"This is a residential building, for artists."
Sounds nice enough, but let me unpack that for you. It means though the building appears to be art oriented at first glance, it is actually a residential building populated in part by artists who may create art there but are encouraged to show that art elsewhere. If one deigns to display their art in the halls or lobby area, 5 residents (some or all of which may not be artists) can force you to take it down because they find it offensive. Take a moment to think about the likelihood of someone finding something offensive in today's world. Take a moment to think about the kind of environment that allows artists to censor other artists. Does that sound like a constructive artist community to you? One artist friend actually had the police called on an abstract painting he hung in the hall.
There is a high "woke" factor in this building. If you're woke enough, this place is for you (maybe). If not, you will quickly find the climate becoming hostile.
I encourage anyone interested in living in this place to talk to a few long time residents not exclusively chosen for you by resident management to get a feel for what it's actually like. I can't speak for what the other Artspace buildings are like, I've heard good things. But this one has been dysfunctional since it's inception.
One star actually earned for:
-Hard to beat value of space/cost. -Toilet flushes very well. -No pest problems.
Four stars deducted...
Read moreArtspace changed my life in a way that will follow me for the rest of my days this place showed me the ups and downs of being a part of a community but if you want a true living breathing community, this is the place to be. i made so many friends in my time spent there, and relationships with people that i will never forget.
with any community there is always the common struggle of tiny arguments, but as long as you yourself are a relatively chill person you wont come into any trouble.
my tips to future residents are these: -communicate in a timely manner with management, it will make their job easier and they will appreciate it -talk to your neighbors next to you! the walls can be kind of thin as well so keep them in mind -dont cause conflict on purpose, it will get you nowhere -COMMON SENSE!
overall my experience was a very positive one. the cons were heavily outweighed by the affordable cost to live there
pros: -community is alive, most people are friendly -garden space on the roof helps you feel not like a city slave -huge open units -ada accessible! -very good bathrooms
cons: -no disposal in sinks/ no dishwasher -no washer and dryer in unit, have to pay a hefty amount for each load (sometimes upwards of 4-8$) -rent increases every year are a little too big for people with limited income and if you're not careful can...
Read moreThis live in management is a nightmare. There has been an ongoing harassment of the tenants. There have been two lawsuits against the managers; one for discrimination, and yet here they are. Many of the landlord-tenant laws are ignored, and people get so worn out, stressed-out and tired of fighting for things that are necessities; for example the removal of the thirty foot dust bunny and it's colony next to the elevator, or basically anything at all. Changing rules constantly, is allowed; yet tenants must conform to every word of the lease. The monitoring tenants, and other actions aimed to make life miserable for anyone who does not conform is completely ignored by Coast and Art space even though people have been complaining in writing for years. This summer alone - 29 complaints other than myself that I know of out of 40 units. Seven people have moved out in the last year alone due to management here. The building is a mess, half of the tenants do not do their laundry here . There are no amenities, not even a garbage disposal. The deck is bait and switch advertising. Why not just complain to the owners you may ask?? We are not allowed to. (also illegal) The above is true, witnessed and backed up by others who will not speak up. Still...
