Extra Space Storage — Attraction in Hasbrouck Heights

Situation: Father Passed away about 5 years ago and recently found out about a storage unit that "He" has been paying for about 8 years. Would like to clear out unit and see what's inside. LEGALLY: HAVE DEATH CERTIFICATE AND PROOF OF RELATIONSHIP

Cant get any information about the account because it is in his name and attached to an email and phone number that no longer exists.

Cant get into the unit cause of the padlock (which was purchased by my father and owned by my father) and the key is lost to time. Can't cut the padlock because if i try they will call the police and charge me for destruction of property and theft. Understandable for protection of the property in total, but if they know its your storage unit that you are trying to break into they will still call the cops and have me charged with destruction of my own property? That question was responded with a firm "yes"

If stop payment, the unit goes into an auction and I wouldn't be allowed to bid on it.

I am not allowed to cancel the account until the unit is cleared out. (this is to me is the biggest laugh out loud)

Never been treated so poorly by a company in my life. When asked to speak to a manager, the response I was given was "I am the Manager" in the most smug tone one can have. When asked for the district managers information, I was told "NO" and was told they have them would contact me. I then watched him text said manager (had him tell me her name) and call her to ... idk give her a heads up about the situation. This "Manager" treated me like a child, to the extent that he told me his age and how long he's been doing this implying that i didn't know what i was talking about.

I think the building is very clean and well maintained, but if you have any type of issue or instance where you need to talk to management, Good Luck!

Overall, I think this is greed and a company choosing its bottom line over basic human decency. You can choose to do the right thing and help out the customer, or you can be rude and make the customer jump through a ton of hoops so they can get an extra month or 2 of the storage units rent.

A storage unit..... because of a storage unit, that my deceased father made, i was treated like a child, spoken to in a way i haven't since he was alive, and now have a headache to deal with that includes talking to lawyers and figuring out what the next steps are.

its also been 4 hours in the middle of a Wed. and I still haven't been contacted from a District Manager

This Extra Space Storage location is the best! They are more then just storage. During this pandemic they have shown great compassion in waiving late fees. They have give me a courtesy to avoid having to charge me a late fee. Now this might sound crazy but these courtesy calls are more like receiving a call from a old friend. Even before this unfortunate pandemic I have personally witness their professionalism and compassion. For example there was a very rude customer who did not want to go over the rental contract which was for her protection and JP didn’t waiver in the slightest from his high standard of professionalism and she wound up renting a storage unit. After dealing with such a rude customer I asked JP how do you do it in terms of being so even keeled and professional. His friendly and personable demeaner never changes. Then there was another time in which there was an old man who was a long time customer and had fallen ill and they worked with him as he had fallen behind. I have always been greeted with a friendly smile and was always made to feel like I was more than a number or dollar sign but as a person. From the first day that you move in to up until your last the level of service never changes as it is always first rate. The place is always so clean and sanitize which has never been more important than now. They have a security system in place which they monitor and review to keep your stored items safe. JP & Orlando the manager at this location are the reason why I choose to store my things with Extra Space and the reason why I will continue to use Extra Space storage for all of my storage needs going forward. Once you have stored with JP & Orlando you will not trust storing your valuable items with anyone else. A company is only as good as the employees that represent it and JP & Orlando makes Extra Space look good. Lastly Orlando the manager at this location who replaced another great manager has been nothing...

(7/14/2021) Changing this from a 5 star experience to 1 star. Just got a notice in the mail that my next months rental will go up by over $80 a month ($260.25 to $345.55...over 30% increase)! On their mailing they state the following BS "As a month to month rental provider, our rates are reviewed and adjusted depending on current market conditions." I don't know what they're talking about because other rental spots I've seen in the surrounding area are the same prices they were when I originally looked back in April when I got this unit at Extra Space Storage. I've only been in the unit for 4 months too. If I didn't have only 1 or 2 months to go, I'd definitely be out soon. Other storage places I've been to never increased it by this much and after a short time (usually it was at least 6 months before increasing the price) BUYER BEWARE. Also there is a clause on this mailing that states "This rate change notice will only go into effect to the extent permitted by applicable law." Just because you can doesn't mean you should. I'd be more understanding if they moved it up maybe half at $40 or if I had been in the unit over a year ....but an $80 increase 4 months in is completely unacceptable... definitely buyer beware....$345.55 now for a measly 10 ft x 10 ft unit.

(April 2021) Easy online rental with everything spelled out for you. Good map showing you where your storage unit is so you know where to park even before showing up. Got a nice follow-up call from JP asking me if I had any questions. He also helped me out a month ago when I had not yet decided to purchase a unit and never pressured me into getting anything since I wasn't...
