Big grassy park next to the beach. Seems the big draw are the 8 pickleball courts. My review of the PB courts: Pros - they have a good system for filling the courts when people are waiting (see below); most everyone we played or just waited with were nice (mix of residents and visitors). Cons - tight squeeze with balls constantly interrupting games; most courts have significant cracks that do impact a couple of plays per game; it can and does get windy, can get very busy (but not always).
Seems like more cons than pros but the reality is that it's free pickleball in Hawaii with a good group of people. So go there and play and enjoy.
Their system of processing player on the court: They have a grid on a dry-erase board where 4 players put names in one square, and the next 4 players in the the next square and so on. They have 3 colors of pens representing 3 skill levels with the idea that you would match up with other people in your level. This works in theory but it seems most people overshoot their skill level. Rarely do people use the Novice pen. Most use the Intermediate and Advanced pens. The teams can and will...
Read moreWaipuilani Park is an amazing place to watch the sunset! My wife and I recently spent a week in Kihei. On the first full day of our stay we wanted to watch the sunset on the beach. It was one of the most beautiful sunset experiences I have ever had.
We arrived about an hour before sunset and the beach was nearly empty. On the southern end of the beach just over the bluff by the parking lot and public restrooms we found the most incredible spot. There is a shade tree with part of it's trunk growing horizontally on the sand. Its a living bench! It was such a beautiful spot I could imagine it being a location for professional photography or film.
As sunset approached the beach began to fill up with people. There we were in our own natural semi-private cabana watching the tropical sunset. That will be a cherished memory for the...
