We rented at the Maui Sunset for 5 nights and only stayed 1 night. The place was dirty. The air conditioning only worked in 4 hour increments with a timer. Upon looking at this unit on the website we knew it was not new and not up to date. What we didn't know is that the carpets were dirty, the drapes in the bedroom were stained and dirty, the unit smelled musty/moldy, the silverware was dirty, the cabinets falling apart and refrigerator had parts falling off and that the a/c was on a timer. None of this shows on pictures. Had to wash plates and silverware before we could use them when we arrived. We never received the emails the management company said they sent stating who to contact upon arrival and there wasn't any binder in the unit to advise contact information either. We stayed one night only because we arrived late afternoon. There is no one in the office on weekends. Day 2 of our Maui vacation I sent two emails to the management company and advised them of the condition of the unit and we would no longer be staying for the remaining 4 nights. It was that bad! We immediately went and rented elsewhere and found a very nice and clean unit down the street. We provided the Maui Sunset management company with the receipt at the new location and asked for a refund but they refused. They stated we knew it was an "aging unit" and not "5 stars" and should not have expected otherwise. They proceeded to blame us for not giving them a 2nd chance to make things better. There was obviously "no quality control" to make sure the unit was in 100% working order. They do not take pride in what they are offering on their website. Look over all the reviews. This is not the first negative review of this complex. They date back to 2012. This is an ongoing issue and all they care about is renting regardless of the condition of the units. We are rating this complex as a negative 5 it does not even deserve 1 star but had to check one to post this review. Totally disappointed with unit and the lack of integrity from the management company. Doing the right thing starts "before" the guests arrive. DO NOT...

In the midst of a horrible experience with Maui Sunset Vacation Rentals. Walked into the condo and saw about 100 cockroaches, mainly in the kitchen but in every other room including bathrooms. I notified the property managers immediately they responded within 12 hours and offered to try to make it right. We literally could not leave any food on the counter, otherwise roaches would be on it within seconds. Within 10 minutes of entry into the condo we had cockroaches on our suitcases. I first interacted with Carrie who was pleasant and apologetic for the situation but stopped well short of offering a refund. They offered to move our party from a 3 bedroom to a 2 bedroom unit with a $500 refund. Our party size required a 3 bedroom unit as that is what we booked, so not a viable option. After staying for a few hours and spraying the roaches myself, we got all of our belongings and persons out of the property for proper mitigation. After this, we were told by the property manager, Steve, that we should have not have left the condo. They said they would “spray” but we shouldn’t leave because the spray was non toxic! Haha what roach killer is non-toxic?!?!?!? Absolutely unbelievable, they expect us to stay in a cockroach infested condo while they make efforts to mitigate the infestation. Any other reasonable property manager would refund in the situation would never consider booking here again. I understand the island has roaches, but the ridiculous part is for the property manager to expect you to stay during an infestation and not offer a refund.

Update July 7th, 2023. After disputing with my credit card and Maui Sunset challenging the dispute for 6 months, I finally received a full refund for the booking. I’d have to say my interactions with Steve from Maui Sunset were beyond horrible, an absolute jerk, I would never do business with him or his company again. He tried to bully me and my family about the roach situation somehow implying it was our fault. Get a clue, you are supposed to be in the hospitality business....

Located in the south side of Maui on South Kihei Road, the Maui Sunset is a condominium complex comprised of individually-owned vacation rental properties. There is a management office onsite that takes care of check-in/check-out, administration, and facility maintenance. My wife and I spent eight nights here in mid-October 2024.||We stayed in Unit B-402, which is a one-bedroom condominium. It features two small bathrooms, each with a shower, and a fully furnished kitchen that includes a dishwasher, full-sized refrigerator and wine cooler, as well as a washer and dryer unit. Adjacent to the kitchen is a trundle bed, a dining area and the living room. Beyond that is a large furnished balcony (actually more of a lanai) with a partial view of the ocean. The property owner kindly provides beach towels and mats, pool toys, and a multitude of board games.||There is no central air conditioning, but there are room AC units in both the bedroom and living room. There are also two ceiling fans and several floor fans available if needed. During our stay, everything (plumbing, lights, AC, flat screen television, wireless Internet, etc.) worked fine. The mattress on the bed felt a little old and sagged in places, but we ended up sleeping OK. ||The common areas are well-maintained, especially the highly manicured landscaping. The pool area is very pleasant, and the property connects with Waipulani Beach, a small public beach where you can see some spectacular sunsets. NOTE that there is no food service or gift shop on site, but the property is only a few blocks away from the commercial section of Kihei, where you can find supermarkets, pharmacies, gift shops and numerous restaurants.||The location served us well as a base for our Maui activities – Wailea, Makena, and Maalaea Harbor are all a short drive away. Kahului Airport is less than a 30-minute drive, and both Kapalua and Haleakala National Park are reasonable commutes.||All-in-all, we enjoyed our stay at the Maui Sunset and can happily recommend it to fellow...

Have you stayed here? Maui Sunset is conveniently located in Kīhei on the water. The pool was a great size and there is a hot tub as well. Our room was a one bedroom with two full bathrooms, a Murphy bed, and a fold out couch. There was a washer and dryer in the room along with a full kitchen. The view from our 3rd floor balcony was about the only nice thing about this place. That's sad considering we were told we upgraded to a better space (not sure why...perhaps overbooking of 1st/2nd floor spaces). First, the place was not clean...looks like only a quick cleaning is ever done as you can see buildup of dirt and gunk all over. The floor had several stains, dishes in the cabinets were not clean, the fridge and freezer were also dirty. The sheets were clean, but one had a hole in it. We saw bugs inside daily. Ants and several different critters were spotted and killed on a daily basis. The balcony furniture is also very run down. The chairs were stacked left inside for some reason. When moving outside and unstacking, I noticed one was heavily damaged and probably would have collapsed if I'd sat on it! All of the chairs had significant wear, with jagged edges showing. It was obvious that this was known to the owners as there was duct tape applied at one point to try to cover it up! An odd thing with the washer and dryer was that the washer was about half the size of the dryer (don't forget to buy your laundry detergent). You also can't use the washing machine when you are not there due to property policy, but the washer is ridiculously loud! So don't count on watching tv or taking a nap/siesta and washing a hiking clothes from the morning. Lastly, the air conditioners are plugged into outlet timers. Unfortunately, these timers last only 4 hours. This becomes a problem at night and early morning as the A/C shuts off and the bedroom heats up, causing us to wake up in a pool of sweat! The A/C was also the only thing to drown out the noise, as our 'upgraded' room was next to an exit door and trash shoot and a family of chickens on the other side of the parking lot. Been to Kihei 3 times, this was easily the worst.

Absolutely flabbergasted and utterly disappointed describes my experience at this Maui condo rental. The list of issues seemed never-ending: from a moldy Britta to a missing rice cooker and a dysfunctional can-opener that nearly injured my mother, it was a series of unfortunate events. The bedroom sink refused to drain, leaving us with standing water, a broken dresser drawer and disgusting heavily yellow-stained pillows and sheets, including the mattress. Just when we thought it couldn't get worse, the patio glass shattered on our last night. It was evident that the unit hadn't been thoroughly inspected. But what truly shocked me was the complete lack of remorse from the rental management, they offered a patronizing description of the differences between a resort and a condo rental. This was supposed to be a birthday celebration, and instead, I spent the entire vacation emailing the management, trying to rectify these issues. Honestly it was a nightmare. To make matters worse, the pool was filled with splashing diaper-wearing babies and entitled individuals who made it clear we didn't belong. As a Mexican family, we certainly didn't feel welcomed by other patrons. I strongly advise against giving this place any business opportunity. Save your money and seek accommodations elsewhere. I'm still furious about wasting my time and money here.
