This review is quite lengthy, and I strongly recommend you take the time to read the entire review as it may save you some annoyance and experience of not really getting what you paid for.
I booked suite 2E at the Koa Resort in Maui for our 12 day vacation in Maui. I was travelling with my son and daughter-in-law and their 2 children aged 2 ½ and 6 months.
As indicated in the e-mailed check-in information, we arrived at Koa Resort at approximately 4:00 PM to check into our unit #2E. When we arrived at the unit some maintenance had just been completed and the paint on the kitchen ceiling valance was still wet above the stove and cupboards, and there was a distinct paint odor. I mentioned to both Kelli and Michael that I was not happy with having to be greeted into our unit with the smell of fresh paint, but the comment was just shrugged off with a response that it will dry soon and the odor will be gone The odor remained through the evening and into the next morning, and I was displeased to have to smell the odor of fresh paint for our initial evening and the following morning.
During the first day in the unit it was evident that minimal cleaning had been performed prior to our stay. We found a number of issues with the unit, including:
• two screws on our bedroom carpet, • dead bugs in the small bedroom closet, • renovation debris, wood shavings and pieces of PVC pipe on the floor of the living room. • some miscellaneous garbage in the living room, • A children’s sucker stick on the kitchen floor, • drywall dust on the bedroom molding, • significant amounts of dust on the door and door louvers to the washing machine/dryer and hall closets, and
The unit also had a number of mechanical issues, including:
• The dishwasher unit not being secured into the cabinet. The dishwasher was continually falling out every time we loaded and unloaded the dishwasher. • The door handle on the oven was very loose and eventually the handle and front glass panel came completely loose and fell off while we were cooking. This was quite unexpected and actually dangerous as the oven was on and extremely hot when this occurred. • The air conditioning had been recently done. There were open exposed pipes and electrical wire running along the walls and ceiling. This is a significant safety issue with unshielded electrical wire exposed along the kitchen ceiling and living room floor refrigerant lines.
With a small, active toddler and an infant in the unit, the safety issues created by the poor cleaning and the mechanical items were extremely concerning, and, quite frankly, unacceptable.
Other minor issues included the following:
• The drapes in the living room need repair. They do not shut all the way as there are hooks missing from the rail rod. • The condo advertised that it was equipped with a land line telephone, but there was no phone in the unit • The internet service in our unit was out for 2 extended periods (2 to 3 hours each) during our stay. Whether this was unusual or not I can’t say, but if you are planning to use the internet for work or meetings during your stay, be aware that it may an issue. This was not a complex issue, but an issue with the internet service provider.
One last note is the communication, or lack of, experience, we have had with the property broker. Towards the end of our stay, we sent an email to Kelli Swan about our experience staying in this unit. The email was sent on Nov. 11th and we waited a few days to hear from her as Nov. 11 was a holiday and then we moved into the weekend. As I write this review (Nov. 20th) I have yet to hear from her. I reached out to Kelli asking her to respond to my email before writing a review of our experience at 2E Koa Resort Maui. Still no reply. This is incredibly frustrating, very unprofessional, and begs the question whether ours, or anyone else’s rental issues will be addressed, or just ignored.
This was just our experience and may not reflect others experiences with this unit, but I wanted others to be aware of our experience and not...
Read moreWe viewed Apt. 2-B and found it in horrible condition but were promised that holes in the walls, stinky and filthy drapes would be cleaned, a water ruined carpet would be removed and adhesive removed, a security screen door would be installed and various other deficiencies remedied. Both the R.E. agent and man who was to do the repairs were present. We signed a 6 month lease, detailing existing damage, with an option to renew for another 6. We returned to WA, packed up needed furnishings and etc. and returned to Kihei.......to find that the ONLY work done was to remove the mildewed rug. There was black mold growing and the unit was full of roaches. Needless to say, despite promises and later evasions and finally word that "The unit is being repossessed by the bank and the Board would not be putting ANY money into it. Burners on the stove failed, the dishwasher quit working, the disposal delivered its ground contents to the defunct dishwasher and the ice maker quit. To get any cooling we had to leave the from door open, without a screen, so ash and leaves blew in.
I was there to recuperate from a series of illnesses, and this was known to the agent. There was no A/C so we installed a small one in he bedroom window (behind a barrier of vegetation) and were given 24 hours to remove it since we hadn't asked! It apparently was in the rules which we did not get for SIX months despite repeated requests. The story goes on and on. We left after 10 months and only stayed that long because I had relapsed and packing was difficult.
We ordered a container and a resident owner showed us where we could park it. It was to be packed and hauled within 8 hours but a truck breakdown left it sitting there 3 days. We tried alternatives, notified our agent of our lack of success getting it moved which was a priority for us, too, since it was booked on a ship! The Board fined us $300 and took it from the damage deposit. They ignored the over $400 worth of work and money we had put into the condo, plus leaving it pristine
DO NOT RENT FROM THE BOARD. DO NOT BUY THIS CONDO SINCE IT HAS STRUCTURAL DAMAGE FROM THE FLOODING THAT WRECKED THE CARPET. DO NOT TRUST ANYTHING THE PRUDENTIAL AGENT MH SAYS WILL BE DONE OR EXPECT HIM TO CHAMPION YOUR CAUSE WITH THE BOARD. YOU may NOT speak to the board yourself!
Renting from individual owners is fine....but be SURE to get the rules.Almost EVERYTHING is...
Read moreWe have stayed at many of these condos in Keihei over the past few years. The thing is that most of the units in these developments are individually owned so in that regard the units can vary widely. Some are updated, some are not. Some are clean, some are not. Sometimes I’m amazed at how these million dollar properties are so outdated but it’s Hawaii and services and goods are expensive so these places go decades between refurbishments.
Our particular unit was not awesome (outdated, old beds, not the cleanest) but it did have AC so that was good. It was on par with other units we have stayed in around Keihei and I did see some other very nice units in the complex.
The complex itself is nice. It’s quiet. It’s right across from the beach and easily walkable. The grounds are very shady and kept up pretty well. The pool is a highlight! Big and shady! Parking can be a pain depending on what unit you’re in (prepare to carry groceries etc.) It’s close to lots of other beaches, restaurants, shops etc. but you likely will want a car for getting around if staying here.
I would stay here again but might look and pay for...
