Caveat Emptor!

We love the quality of the candies and nuts. However, I placed an order 5 weeks before ship date to save the Christmas rush, to be shipped the week of December 9th. I ordered 6 varieties (1/2 pound each) to be packaged and shipped to 5 different addresses, 1 to myself. Because they do not have online ordering or even email confirmation, I placed my order over the phone. We live in Wisconsin. I spent almost an hour on the phone with a representative painstakingly going over addresses and the like. Each package contained the same items for simplicity sake. The representative told me someone would call me when order is being packaged to let me know exactly how much my credit card would be charged allowing for shipping costs, how shipped (UPS, USPS, FedEx.....), tracking numbers, ETA, etc. I asked that my receipt be mailed to me and that each shipment contain a small card stating “Merry Christmas from The Blackburns”.

On Monday, December 9, 2019, my card was charged $390.56. I waited a couple of days to see if I would receive a call. I called the store today, two days after being charged, and was transferred to different people, finally getting an owner. I was told that she herself packaged the order and it was done as the order stated and shipped on Monday. She said that they are “meticulous”. The owner was curt with me when I asked if a card or note indicating who the package was from was included. She said it was not asked for in the order. I contacted each recipient to let them know that a package was coming to them from Holland, Michigan, and that it is from us. (A phone call to me providing pertinent information would have avoided this sloppiness.)

The recipients received their packages without knowing from whom it came. There was no name on the return address, just the address. There was no brochure or business card included. Each box was wrapped in holiday wrap with someone’s handwriting with initials on the wrapping. No ribbon. The boxes were tacky. You would think that after spending close to $400.00, that they would provide better customer service and quality of packaging.

We were hoping to make this an annual gift. My husband’s family is from Holland. It was supposed to be a special gift for that reason.

My sister was the one who recommended that I visit this place years ago. I have to confess that the summer I worked here, I looked, but never indulged. Well, that has changed! On our last visit I picked up a mixed bag. This time, I went back in order to bring home a birthday gift for friend and to get a couple pieces for myself.

While I really wasn’t crazy for their chocolate covered blueberries or chocolate covered cherries last time (they were Way too sweet for me), I absolutely loved their peanut butter peanut truffle! So I got one of those for myself and also decided to try the Keylime Truffle. It has an absolutely delicious dark chocolate exterior that I loved! I would definitely get that one again!

To make up my girlfriend’s birthday box, I asked what their most popular were. The girl behind the counter directed me towards the turtles and the chocolate covered caramels. So I did those along with an assortment of other truffles I thought she would particularly like (coffee truffle and the chipotle truffle). I felt like this was the perfect thing to bring home for my chocolate loving friend!
