While Houston Community College System is affordable, I do not recommend HCC Coleman for students seeking to enter any area of the medical profession. I attended the Licensed Vocational Nursing Program there in the past. It was riddled with technical problems and the professors basically had free reign to operate like dictators. In the second semester of courses nearly everyone failed out due to the Pharmacology teacher telling them to study for an exam using lecture notes and then she built the test using the text book. It is noteworthy that I scored around second highest on that exam. I believe I made a 67. They failed me out on the Medication Math Exam by one question. I needed an 85 to pass and I made an 82.5. I tried to help my fellow students. I received the only Student Servant Leadership Award despite being written up by Mary Luckett simply for using the name of HCC Coleman Class of 2011 on social media for our private Facebook group. There we would exchange information to help each other with the program. Ms. Luckett became upset with me when I started a petition after they failed to get our class a student tutor through the academic success center. She was further irritated when I answered questions other students asked me during class about tutorials, despite knowing I had a leadership role among students within the program. Another Professor with tenure named Pearlie Watts was there when I received the write-ups and she strongly protested the decision Ms. Luckett made to pursue disciplinary action via recorded write-ups. Ms. Watts was a wonderful professor. She was kind and she cared about the students. She was overruled by Ms. Luckett. She was disappointed with how they treated me. She retired at the end of the semester. Ultimately, I left the program when they told me I would have to wait five months to retake the Medication Math Exam. Several students discussed seeking legal compensation through lawsuits because of mismanagement and other problems the program had due to mistakes made and lies told by professors and program leadership. Eventually they terminated the Pharmacology Professor. She was going through a bad divorce and that probably effected her performance as a teacher during my time there. I have verbatim records of what the professors said in many cases. In hindsight I should have spoken the dean and sought damages through the legal system due to how I was treated during the program. I should have known when the admissions counselor refused to give me success or graduation statistics for students entering the program despite my insistence that she do so. After the program, I spoke to counselors downstairs about what had happened and how disappointed I was with their handling of the situation. They did not offer any support or resolution for my grievances with the program’s staff or other problems. The general attitude the professors had toward us was one of disregard and disrespect. Several including a professor who called herself the “Med Surge Witch” sought to intimidate us and she all but told me that she would see to it that I would not make it through her course because I already had two disciplinary write-ups. They wanted me to fail. An overwhelming majority of my fellow students disagreed with how I was treated and the write-ups I received. Following the write-ups, a formal election was called in class but I refused to accept the position of class president. I felt I had payed a terrible price for advocating for my fellow students, but I do not regret my decisions because I did nothing wrong. You are supposed to care about the success of your students. They did not care about us in the Licensed Vocational Nursing Program. This review is just the beginning. The bill comes due. I was glad to read in other reviews that they lost their nursing accreditation some time ago. The LVN program here is a black hole for your money, hopes, and dreams. Don’t even consider this place. I only hope other prospective students read this review and seek their...
Read moreI would have awarded this school zero stars if possible. The nursing program, it's administration (all the way to the top), and many of it's instructors are sub par. There are a few good instructors, but they are overshadowed by the misdeeds of the rest. All of the negative reviews posted here and other sites are spot-on. This program functions as if it was slapped together as an afterthought whilst the program head sat on the commode and then passed it under the stall to be approved. The disarray, professional incompetence, and many other issues run deep. The program president (Ms. Jolly Joseph) and the college president (Mr. Philip Nicotera) hide from students, especially those with FACTUAL concerns. I dare either one of these individuals to deny it. I attempted to message Mr. Nicotera multiple times, I called, and personally visited his office on several occasions, all to no avail. After spending thousands of dollars, this was like a slap in my face. As all said individuals could do is ignore me and hide behind a harebrained policy (all documented). I wouldn't trust any of these snakes to teach a dog how to sit, much less teach someone how to be a nurse. At the program I transferred to, the ADN president's door was always open, she was active in student life and she had ETHICS. Upon bringing up these dire matters about the ADN program I was even retaliated against by these so-called "professionals." We were forced to spend $400 plus tax on an NCLEX prep package that was not even functional. No refund was ever given. In a hard won meeting within the sacrosanct office of Ms. Joseph, she told me that this money was spent on other mysterious supportive items. Yet she couldn't name any of them when asked. Another instructor slammed an office door in my face in front of another student when approached. Then she had the audacity to deny it as if my eyes and ears don't work. As another poster summed it up, this school is a "money pit." My only mistake was not better researching nursing schools. When I was at this school, I along with my classmates were told that all nursing schools were like this. Now that I'm attending another ADN program, I've found that too was a blatant lie. In all my life I've never been subjected to such unethical treatment and been lied to by so many "educated" individuals. STUDENTS BEWARE. Do your research and spend your hard-earned money at another school where student success is actually practiced and not just joked about in the lavatory. Don't let this school discourage you, there really are quality programs in the Houston area.... sadly this isn't one them. The ADN department and upper administration at Coleman College is a loathsome blemish on the face of Texas Medical Center. For reading and hearing so much about honesty, accountability, and professionalism, those are the things I've seen the least. Ask mostly any student currently enrolled and they will tell you. I can't vouch for other allied health programs in this college, but the nursing department functions like a circus with clowns running the show. Next time I want to see a show like this I'll go watch Cirque de Soleil...at least that's tasteful and worth my money. SHAME ON YOU HCC AND SHAME ON THE ADMINISTRATION AND SHAME ON MUCH OF THE FACULTY!!! I'm posting this review in good faith because after my terrible experience I wouldn't want another student to step in to this ridiculous mess. It is interesting that the only negative reviews are in regards to the nursing department... I would have been better off buying my books on Amazon and teaching myself how to be a nurse. It's terrifying that these people work in a healthcare setting. The way these "professionals" act, you'd think they were all hired on Craig's List. Lastly, if any school officials read this and take issue, I have a FULL PAPER TRAIL of DOCUMENTATION backing up everything that was posted here and I'm more than happy to publish everything in public forum. Again,...
Read moreWorst RN program with worst Director of program (Dr sharp) that I ever seen in my life. During covid time we did not have any chance for even practice skills in school for 2 semester. All of my hospital clinical experience for whole program were just 10 days. Dr sharp never care students complain of the educarion system. He never was available for students and listen to their concerns. It is not wandering why thier nursing board score is low. Right now I am doing my residency program and I found that all student from others university or college have 16 days clinical hospital for each course during covid and even whole one semster was dedicated for hospital experience. I just can say Hcc is fraudulent. They always told us that nursing is hard, but it could be easier if we had a caring and well managed manager. They do not respect student. They always taught us that as a nurse you should be good listner, be problem solver, and be respectful, but I never found Rn department (especially dr sharp) act as a good listener and respecting students. This Hcc changed my mind about the state college. However There were just few good...
