Holiday Magic Nineth stop - Jingle Town: A delicate mini park located at the core of the theater district. Surrounded by symphony halls, opera houses, and other artistic theaters, it's imbued with a strong cultural and artistic atmosphere. In this small space, there are various pleasing and interactive art installations. Picture two shows a bright yellow swing that appears uniquely solitary against the backdrop of the night sky and lights. There also multiple tandem rocking chair with back-to-front seating, offering a fun experience of cooperation. From a distance, look like there are three musical instrument installations. Upon closer approach, one discovers handles - when turning, they play Christmas symphonies led by the respective instruments, enchanting and melodious, making one linger and forget to leave. Particularly, the large guitar doubles as a small slide, providing endless fun for children. It's said that Holiday Magic installed ten of these music boxes, looking forward to the next exploration...

What started out to be a good experience turned into a horrible one. We went to listen to a guitarist who was really good but when we needed to go to the bathroom and tried to go where it said Park restrooms I was chased by a security guard up the ramp and told I could not enter the building and go to the bathroom for some dumb reason? Apparently they have no restrooms here at this park and everybody just has to pee themselves. I would never go back here or suggest anyone ever come back to this...

From Heat Island to Oasis | Houston Theater District’s New Cultural Landmark Located in downtown Houston’s Theater District, the Lynn Wyatt Square for the Performing Arts (formerly Jones Plaza), designed by RIOS, transforms the original plaza into an interconnected, accessible, and inclusive green public space. Through year-round music, theater, dance, opera, film, art installations, and festivals, it has become a central hub for locals and visitors to experience the arts. Inspired by Houston’s unique natural environment—bays, wetlands, and lush greenery—the project reimagined a former concrete plaza atop an underground parking garage, which had become an urban heat island due to poor accessibility. The core challenge for the design team was: How can a public space truly serve a diverse community? The solution was positioning Lynn Wyatt Square as a nexus connecting the district’s cultural resources. Guided by the concept of "urban choreography," the plaza’s dynamic layout mirrors the fluidity of performing arts. Its curved design links five distinct zones: green spaces, an event lawn, water features, and open-air art spaces, while integrating with nearby institutions like the Houston Symphony and Ballet as an "outdoor stage." Vibrant color schemes further enhance the lively atmosphere. To combat heat, the original concrete area was converted into a green roof over the parking garage, planted with 14 mature oak trees and native vegetation, alongside immersive water features. Hardscape was reduced by 19%, while greenery increased by 91.8%, enabling annual carbon storage of 3,075 lbs (~1,395 kg) and stormwater retention of 10,936 gallons (~41 tons). For hurricane resilience, the site was elevated to Houston’s 500-year flood level, ensuring safety for structures and vents. Once enclosed by concrete walls, the redesigned plaza now opens on all sides, adding four ADA-compliant pathways and increasing seating capacity by 60%. Wheelchair-accessible water platforms allow direct interaction, while adjacent walkways invite visitors to traverse fountains, fostering engagement. RIOS developed a cohesive visual identity for the plaza, with a logo featuring dynamic typographic transitions inspired by dancers’ movements. The signature bright yellow draws from plaza furnishings, while signage blends seamlessly with landscape materials, accommodating future diverse programming. #Houston #TheaterDistrict #PublicSpace #UrbanDesign #SustainableArchitecture #ArtsAndCulture #Accessibility #GreenInfrastructure #Placemaking #RIOS
