Update: I attended Hook's Tale. This was my second time at this theater. My first was several years ago and I had a terrible experience. I figured I would give them another try. What a mistake. This experience was just as bad I'd not worse than my first horrible experience here. As you can see in my picture I had basically no view. That picture was taken at a sharp angle to try to show the front of the stage. I basically stared at the side of the boat the entire play. It was a complete waste. No where on the website when I was purchasing tickets did it say obstructed, or better yet no view! The theater was extremely cold. The people around me and I were shivering the entire time. It was so cold and the view was so bad the people behind me left at intermission before sharing with me how disappointed they were. The line to get in was extremely long. Nothing like sweating in 92 degree weather heat. Then to go in and literally freeze. The line was so long because they were checking covid Vax cards or negative test results. No where did it say on the ticket info that you needed to provide that. Luckily, by chance I had mine. I usually don't carry it because I do not want to lose it. This theater definitely has to do a better job with communication. If seats have obstructed view...that should be made clear. If you require covid Vax cards or negative test results....that should be made clear also. The father and son in front of me were not admitted. The father had his Vax card but his son did not and he was told he needed negative test results. Again, communicate that. I absolutely will NEVER attend any performance at this theater again. Thankfully they don't often have shows I am interested in. I would stay away from this theater. There are plenty of phenomenal local theaters in Houston. Do not waste your time here.
Original post: Parking is a nightmare. There is always something going on in the area causing traffic and endless detours. Attempted to go to a show there today and it took almost 2 hours to get to the theater because of all the detours and traffic Once I finally arrived there were parade floats blocking the street and I was not able to get into the tiny parking lot. Now I have to contact my credit card company to get a refund. Not worth the hassle. I attempted to go there a couple years ago and remember it being the same way. Do not attempt to go to this theater if you cherish...
Read moreWhat a powerful, thoughtful afternoon of EXCELLENT theater with perfect actors!
With the disruption of COVID and aging health issues, going to theater has taken a back seat. Stages Theater for over thirty years was our lifestyle staple in the old venue. On Saturday, my husband and I went to the afternoon show of "Ripples" by Christina Armstrong, since we don't like to drive at night. Four brilliant actors transformed our afternoon into a memory jolt with a reminder of why we need to pay attention to politics and public policy that again is rearing its ugly head..... Every word of the play had meaning and depth, historical accuracy, heartfelt hurt and retrospection, replete with a trajectory that moved the action forward.
The actors and the whole show were Broadway quality in an accessible venue that is in a new beautiful structure with easy, safe parking with wonderful spaces to see and be seen with a full service bar in an area that allows and encourages a perfect space to socialize.
Executive Director, Dexter Livingston, a 1989 grad of my undergraduate school-Brown University, is a delightful theater professional and thoughtful leader in Houston's performance community. Houston arts are very fortunate for his leadership and theater savvy.
My husband and I will now be seen and see the upcoming afternoon shows at Stages, easily accessible down the street from their old location..... We have now taken that first step that works for an awesome and comfortable theater...
Read moreIf you missed STAGES Das Barbecu, you need to kick yourself. You missed Wagner's Ring Cycle turned into a Texas hootenanny, five wonderful actors/actresses playing a multitude of parts...and that is not easy. The theater we were in is intimate. Seating can be on all four sides of the stage and the performance can be played to all four sides of the stage. The performances we have attended, there is only seating on three sides of the stage. There is a cocktail/mocktail bar and drinks are allowed in the theater. Parking is easy if you park in the garage, parking along the street is hit or miss. There are restrooms on both levels of the building. We have attended several of STAGES performances and both times we were not disappointed. My daughter even reminds me when we have a performance at...
