After 70 years the Lancaster public library on North Duke Street was relocated to North Queen Street.
I was there for its first day of operation so this is my review of the library at its new location. It's located in a newly built and modern two story building that is part of Ewell Plaza. Although Google maps directs people to East Chestnut Street the actual entrance to the library is on North Queen Street. The location shown on Google maps is the entrance for the parking garage which does have an elevator that goes directly into the library.
Library has very open spaces with bright lighting. There are rooms for gatherings and meetings with audio visual equipment. Just as in the old library there is a second floor section devoted to children complete with the reading circle. The young adult section seems bigger than what was present in the old library.
Just as the old library had an outdoor courtyard for reading the new library has a second floor outdoor courtyard overlooking North Queen Street.
The unisex bathrooms are equipped with both urinals and toilets.
The staff are the same welcoming people that were present in the old library.
Functionally this library is a vast improvement over the Duke Street location but having use that library for 70 years I will miss the homeliness of that old building.
This is a modern free public library. Although it gets some tax dollars, it has many private supporters. It has a book store and periodic massive book sales with thousands of dirt cheap books, DVDS & CDS. It offers, in addition to books & magazines, internet access, DVDs, video games, CDs and various activities & classes for all ages. Newly released DVDS cost $1.50 for 7 days--beat that Redbox! Older DVDS are free. It offers electronic materials which can be accessed via internet including borrowing books through Libby service and...
Read moreI hadn't been in this library for quite a while, but I dropped in the other day. My kiddo was at a class nearby, and I just wanted a comfortable place to go sit and read for an hour. The joke was on me when I got there! Walking around this library, you'd think it was still 2020. You're greeted at the door by hand sanitizer and a porta-potty, which I later learned was because ALL of the bathrooms are closed. The water fountains are also off, and there is NOWHERE to SIT AND READ! What the heck else are you supposed to do in a library?!? (Also, the entire basement used to be full of books, and now it's blocked off, which makes me wonder where all of those books went.) It was actually really depressing, because it used to be FAR more comfortable. Perhaps, once it moves to its new building, they'll bring back some comfortable reading spaces. In the meantime, don't go there if you...
Read moreEver since I moved back to PA from the state of Delaware I've always loved to read I could read through tons of books. It has been awhile since I read a book because of being so busy. As soon as queen st opened up their new library location I was impressed amazed on how well they made the place look. It looks so spacious and well kept me and my boyfriend love coming to this library. We will definitely keep coming back. I love the children's DVD section although I'm an adult I still enjoy Disney movies and I love all the books they have to choose from. But i do think they need to monitor the bathroom situation. People are peeing on the floors and toilet seat throwing trash on the floors and doing stuff in the bathrooms they aren't supposed to be doing holding other people up that need to use the bathrooms. But other than that...
