This home is also a museum. I was so glad that they were open last week while we were in Lexington and not shut down because of covid! The two historians working there provided a lit of extra information about the home and the items in it, as well as insider information about Mary Todd Lincoln and her family. The home is incredibly well restored, and the garden/courtyard in the back was beautiful. Many of the items in the home belonged to the family, and all of the items were period-accurate. There's also a small gift shop in a room off the 2nd floor balcony that had books and a lot of cute little souvenirs for sale. It's definitely worth seeing! The historians would allow you to self-guide your tour, but would offer information about anything they noticed you stopped to look at, which I liked better than a guided tour where you get shuttled around on the tour guide's schedule. The historians were also willing to answer questions about the property, items in the house, as well as Mary Todd Lincoln and her family. We're so glad we went! There are only a couple of parking spots behind the house, but you can also park in the church parking lot directly across the alley...
Read moreThe Mary Todd Lincoln house is a nice historical gem located in downtown Lexington. Easy to miss, it is worth the visit for anyone interested in history. It does a good job of trying to show and explain the life and times of what could be one of America's least understood First Ladies.
The self-guided tour easily eats up about an hour of your time, and when I was there, the gentleman working (whose name escapes me right now), was very helpful and knowledgeable - ready and willing to answer any questions.
The parking lot is around the back, and is quite small. For those with mobility concerns, there is a wheelchair lift so one can access the main floor. The second floor though is not handicap accessible. If you cannot make it to the second floor, they will provide a small album that contains pictures and explanations of the upstairs displays.
Again, a nice little museum, and definitely worth the visit when you're...
Read moreI have been to several history houses and this place could have done so much better. We made reservations in the morning. Once we got in there, I believe Elizabeth, gave us a quick introduction of the house. She was very knowledgeable but then she finished and told us we could walk through the house with the self-guided tour. It would have been so much nicer if she could have walked around and explained things. I also never understand why every "history house" will not let you on the 3rd floor. They always seem to be storage or office space. Office space for what? They had 3 people in the house that wouldn't answer questions. I was also surprised that they had converted many rooms into a gift shop or bathroom or office space. Many of those rooms could have contained more displays. I do realize they need to make money but give me an awesome tour and you will...
