In heart of Downtown LA arts district, this chain gallery houses a number of contemporary artist works that are for sale. It is a wide open space, with an on-site restaurant, Manuela. There are a number of street murals that were kept in original locations, and every wall has a work of art on it. The gift shop is across from Manuela, and has variety of items from jewelry, clothing, pottery, handmade greeting cards to kits to make your own camera.
There is a public garden across from Manuela, where gardening workshops and art classes are held, and houses the Chicks of Manuela (who have Instagram account), a bed of herbs and vegetables to support the restaurant. This is the desire to support sustainability.
The courtyard was at one time an abandoned warehouse. It was transformed into an open space, adding an Coast Live Oak tree with drought resistant plants. (Los Angeles has ordinance about excessive use of water, many fountains are not on 24/7 to conserve water)
The exhibits rotate on fairly regular basis, so he sure to check website for current and upcoming exhibits. I went to see exhibit of Rolling Stone magazine photographer Annie Liebovitz. Amazing display that was walk back in time of events in my lifetime. Most of it was of 1975 Rolling Stones Tour of America, a joy because I am a huge fan! It also included her iconic magazine covers, and many of the celebrities from 1970 to 1983 that she captured.
There isn't a parking garage or lot here, so you'll need to find street parking in area, which is limited. Make sure you pay attention to the signs! Got lucky the day went and found spot in front of the hotel on Hewitt Street, but there is a lot with free parking on Hewitt a short distance from the...
Read moreBringing the art back to the Arts District. Seriously, this area used to actually have artists. Now it’s just hipsters from New York or trust fund artists. That said, this location was a perfect spot to open up a gallery. As they mentioned it used to be an old flour mill, and I love that they left most of the industrial aesthetic in place. You can still see original tiles and beams throughout the structure. It’s a large compound with courtyard for events, a fine dining spot (Manuela), retail shop as well as a location for Artbook a retail book store chain. H&W has locations all across the world and so that name carries a lot of clout with them. They bring in many premiere artists from all over and the shows are pretty much always worthy of a visit. It’s never too crowded (outside of the restaurant) and free to enter. You might have trouble finding parking during the weekend but if you don’t mind walking there’s always a space somewhere. It’s docked one star mostly because they have hardly been occupying the third space at the far right back or the upstrokes area much anymore. There used to be a time where all four spaces were filled with art on view. Sadly not the case anymore it seems.
Still I know we can’t fault them for that but given there’s barely any other galleries in the area (exception being Over the Influence next door and one more down the block that never seems to be open) you’d hope there would be more to keep you there.
Still it’s a great spot for family, dates or solo hangs. There’s an activity area for kids and they often organize seasonal events like fairs and just workshops. Highly recommend when looking for something else besides museums in which to view...
Read moreAlmost 5 stars for me. I called ahead to be sure the Price exhibit I wanted to see before leaving town was open. Once I got the okay, took the drive to see it. Finally found street parking and headed in. Went to the welcome desk to ask questions and was told the exhibits were all free to enjoy.
The Price exhibit was BEAUTIFUL, better in person than the photos I'd seen on IG. Wonderful seeing reflective images in that form and magnitude.
One star was removed for this guard/counter who, as soon as I walked in, judged me and decided to do his job of telling me where I could and could not step/walk when I did not cross the tap markers on the floor and did not give any of the other visitors this message. Not going to lie, my excitement level dropped as I was made uncomfortable being watched while I viewed the art pieces. Get it together. If you're going to do your job do...
