After having tried Prince Street Pizza in New York and after having considered Prince Street Pizza to be one of the best New York Style Slices I ever had since 2016 I was very excited to find out that Prince Street Pizza had arrived in Los Angeles upon my re-entry into this City after being gone long enough to try 101 San Francisco Pizza Establishments and transform into a Top 10% Pizza Reviewer and Exalted Self Diagnosed Pizza Expert.
Listen. I have been to New York. And Italy. And Chicago for that matter. I investigated the West Hollywood location as well as the Ghost Kitchen version of Prince Street Pizza in Sawtelle but somehow settled on actually trying Prince Street Pizza at this location in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles. There was definitely a lot of different Pizzas on display mid-afternoon on a weekday in both round and square form. The Pizza Artist who was present at the time seemed somewhat annoyed with me, but perhaps it was only the anxiety and pressure of the Top P Reviewer arriving at last to try Prince Street Pizza in Los Angeles.
After the nerves had settled, the gentleman displayed a recognition of me that transferred from Pauper to Prince as I became referred to as "Boss" and was recommended to try the Sunset Square as my first Square Slice here. And of course, the regular cheese. Are you ready for this?
Not as good as Prince Street Pizza in New York at all. Likely due to the New York water not being present. Sadly, Prince Street Pizza does not ship their water in from New York City and no one's hands have touched the rail at the Subway there so we're missing some energy here.
The Square is what they specialize in. So keep in mind the Square is better than their slice. The slice is okay. The Cheese Slice would get a 6.7 One Bite Pizza Review scale. 7.8 for the Square style slice.
I would recommend the Square be the direction you focus your energy on here. The New York Slice is only slightly above average.
Prime Pizza factually is way better than Prince Street for the Round Style. Accept and admit it. If you disagree, you must have issues with your taste buds. And not only that you fail to have an objective pallet about Pizza. Facts. Prime Pizza's round style is objectively 2.5 - 3.1 points higher than Prince.
Next time I am going straight for the Square Style. It is Sicilian style it seems. Not Grandma but I sense there could be both present as they do make a large variety of Pizzas which is why they deserve a lot of respect. Most places do not have the balls to make this many Pizzas at once. So no wonder sometimes the staff looks exhausted but they deserve to be rude because they are Pizza Devotees. You understand?
Now, as this review comes to a close I want to mention how the wall there has a lot of Celebrities standing with what i suppose is the owner. Most of the Celebrities are not the kind of people I want to see when I go to eat Pizza personally. How about posting some photos of credible Pizza and Food devotees? Or how about Holy people? How about that instead of these Celebrities who likely don't know anything about Pizza anyway?
It is funny however that the one picture of the owner standing with Kim Kardashian and Khloe Kardashian is hidden behind the napkin dispenser. Good troll. But some of the celebrities who are not blocked by the napkin dispenser are even worse, weaker and worrisome.
Celebrity walls are only cool if you have cool people stopping by to eat there. One day, I'll make you want a picture of me in every location in Los Angeles and New York. Then, the score will be settled. Since I am "Boss" seems only right, doesn't it? You know what I am saying? In San Francisco, owners of established Pizza Restaurants come out to meet me, shake my hand and so on. If they are sitting down, they stand up and they often give me stuff on the house due to the respect they feel I have for them. One day, Prince... I will be on your wall shaking hands and making you feel the power of Pizza Devotion. Pizza Heals. Then, you will get 5 stars....
Read moreOh no...no. This is not right at all. Firstly, this review is in no way targeting the people who work here, they are lovely, they are nice. Maybe too nice, I'll get there.
I love the NYC location. It is one of my favorite places to get pizza. It was the pizza place I would bring friends visiting to because it's an institution. I had waited in the snow, in the rain, in the heat/humidity for the pie. I have tolerated being pushed, shoved, smushed for the pepperoni pizza. I have taken detours to it on the way home because I had cravings. And it was always, always worth it.
But what is this. What is this!?!?!?!? We ordered 4 slices of the pepperoni, because I don't know what else anyone would ever get there, but they were very, very stingy with the pepperoni. It is pilled on in New York, this location looked like they were told "make it even but don't give away too much". The sauce, the sauce is definitely different. I don't know...why is it so sweet?! They did reheat it in the oven but it was not burn your tongue-hot like they would in NYC. It was the same thickness, but it did not have the same crunch.
The store is bigger here, but it's so unnecessary. There was only one party in front of us, and did the thing that would have inspired a good, snappy remark in NYC "what's good here".
And they answered.
The people who worked here answered like a sweet, summer child. "Uuuum well [this] is really popular, but [that] is also really popular, or if you prefer [topping], [the other] is not bad too".
LADY. THE PIZZAS ARE LAID OUT IN FRONT OF YOU. THEY HAVE A LEGIBLE MENU EVEN HERE. WHY DO YOU NEED TO ASK.
So sadly, we will not return because the pizza here falls really, really short of...
Read morePretty mediocre pizza. I got three slices, the original prince, the naughty pie, and the four cheese.
The original prince was just bad. If you're expecting a traditional New York slice, avoid this place. Way too much cheese, the sauce was incredibly sweet, and the dough had the wrong taste and texture. I had no interest in finishing it.
The four cheese was just boring. Not much more to say about it than that. I took one bite and quickly realized there was no reason to have any more. Definitely the wrong choice but I wanted to try a variety.
The naughty pie was the best of the three, but still just alright. It could have used more pepperoni, mine had a total of 4 slices. Once I finished those off, it was just bland pizza again. Didn't end up finishing the slice.
As for the price, it came out to just over $21 for the three slices, not including tip. Extremely overpriced for what you get. Maybe if they charged half the price it would be worth it. Maybe.
Service was pretty bad. The person serving their pizza kept checking their smartwatch and changing the music while people were waiting on him. The cashier seemed to be having a very difficult time. There were only 4 people ahead of me, but it took 15 minutes to order, pay, and get my food.
Overall, I'd say it's an avoid. I should have realized how bad it was going to be when I saw they use electric toasters, e.g. the ones you see in sandwich shop chains, to reheat their pizza. Not an actual pizza oven in sight. They will give you a free slice if you leave them a positive review, so maybe take advantage of that for the discount. There are much better pizza places in the neighborhood. I would patronize...
