Really disappointed with my experience at Shortys. Immediately after checking myself in, I sat in silence in their waiting area- not addressed by any employees until the ābarberā I scheduled an appointment with was ready for me. I arrived with mid length hair. My hair has been bleached twice within the last 6 months. I was planning on intentionally growing out the blonde. After telling the āsenior stylistā what I wanted āa low taper fade, I want to keep the length on topā- he immediately shut down the idea with āwell I donāt know if Iām the right person for you. Iām not like, an actual barber so I usually just cut with the shape of your headā- whaaaat? Why did I pay $10 extra dollars for an appointment with a āsenior experiencedā ābarberā just for them to say something like this? Red flag. I shouldāve left here. However, I with allowing him to cut. I explained again I wanted a low taper and that itās fine, I just need more shape to my hair. Essentially, he did what might have been the best he could have? All the blonde is gone from the sides of my hair. :// I even requested a wash in my online appointment, this didnāt happen tho. I paid for it tho! I even tipped, out of common curiosity. However, I did leave upset and confused overall. My hair isnāt even neatly faded.?
*this was the first time I trusted someone else with my haircut in over 7 years. I am currently getting my hair fixed by my original barber. I gave shortys a chance, since I moved to Hollywood and this is closer to me. Maybe it was just the barber. I donāt know why they would advertise more experienced ābarbersā when he word for word said āIām not like an actual barberā like woah? weāre just cutting hair how we feel or...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI got one of the worst haircuts of my life from a barber at Shorty's.
I came in, showed the barber a picture (a basic skin low fade), and asked him to shape my facial hair.
What did I get? It wasn't a fade, much less a skin fade. He pretty much left a line just above my ears and kept the length above that horrible line the same length. (Perhaps his barber college taught him that a fade didn't have to be, well, a fade?) When I asked him to fix it, he blamed me and said that the man in the picture I showed him had different hair type than I did. While I credited his powers of observation, I reminded him that the picture was meant to show him how high (or low) the fade had to be. He then tried his best to "fix" it, which was barely an improvement. (Did I mention that he didn't even thouch my mustache? I guess his barber college also taught him that mustache wasn't part of facial hair.)
To their credit, Shorty's offered to comp my haircut (I declined) or to have another barber fix my hair (I again declined because I thought it would result in an awkward situation).
I don't mean to suggest that all Shorty's barbers suck (I saw others work, and they seemed pretty good), but this particular one certainly did. (He didn't introduce himself, and I didn't ask his name, but his station is downstairs right under the letter "Y" of the lit "Shorty's" sign...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWas told outright by the female elite stylist with type 3 (nonstraight hair) that she does not cut my "hair type", who then proceeded to walk away without any type of apology or even look at me, and cut white mens hair (her clients).
The receptionist and stylist who DID cut my hair did a great job (I believe his name was Kioni) taking care of me and getting my hair cut with excellent service, but unfortunately I don't feel compelled to give a higher rating because the salon decides to employ stylists who are allegedly deciding to cut certain types of hair and dismiss any clients who do not fit that mold.
If you have a hair type that is anything but straight, consider taking your business where the stylists don't discriminate against you and actually utilize the training that is mandated as part of their cosmetology license.
EDIT: Reading other reviews seems to validate this isn't an isolated instance and ELITE hairstylists at this salon are promoting alleged discrimination based on hair type despite their cosmetology license requiring training for hair basics. I can only imagine that there is a larger spread issue at this salon...
