The Kentucky Derby, held annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, is one of the most iconic horse races in the world. Known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports," this prestigious event has been running since 1875 and is the first leg of the American Triple Crown, followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
The race itself is a 1.25-mile (2 km) contest for three-year-old thoroughbreds, attracting top horses, jockeys, and trainers from around the globe. The Kentucky Derby is as much about the cultural experience as it is about the race, with traditions like the mint julep, extravagant hats, and the singing of "My Old Kentucky Home" adding to its unique charm.
The event draws over 150,000 spectators to Churchill Downs and millions more watch on television. The day is filled with other races, parties, and social gatherings, making it one of the biggest sporting events in the United States. Winning the Kentucky Derby is considered a significant achievement, and the winning horse is often seen as a strong contender for the Triple Crown.

Read moreIf this is on your bucket list get those tickets and go! We purchased through Derby Experiences and would recommend that to anyone. Great service all the way around. Staff working the event werre friendly and there were plenty of staff at every booth. And cannot forget to give a HUGE shoutout to the cleaning staff as well. There were well over 160,000 people at the Derby and they kept sweeping and cleaning as the crowds moved around. For the amount of people and trash people so rudely left behind, these people bust their butts to keep up. I sure hope they are well recognized for their jobs! All the staff from cleaning to food to beverages to wagering; stand up job and top notch service! Also the bus drivers and the parking attendants were very friendly and helpful. Kept things going! And last but not least a huge shoutout to the Police and Military for being there for crowd control and road safety as there is so much going on. We felt very safe walking and...
Read moreThis year was my first time and I had a great time, and learned a lot. Have fun with your outfit (and hat), but wear comfortable shoes because most folks do a lot of walking and standing. Check the weather and bring jackets if needed. People are very friendly though some have a little too much to fun.
Uber/Lyft/taxi drop off locations could be a mile or more from Churchill Downs unless you go early before they close the roads. Parking and using the shuttle is very efficient and easy getting to the track, though there are very long lines to get back on the shuttle to reach your car.
Getting your bets in is easy though you will have to wait in line. Be considerate of others and make your picks before you get in line. The people around you are generally more than happy to help if you ask.
If it’s dry, the infield might be fun, otherwise it is only for the (fool)hardy. Unless you arrive late and...
