Beautiful cemetery. The lady I spoke with at the office was very sweet. The paths are narrow but you can drive around if you don't want to fight the hills. Beautiful scenery all around. I especially Iove the layers to it and all of the little steps to get from one level to the next. Be careful though, some are loose. There's a lot of history here like the Allman brothers and band member. The Hebrew burial ground was interesting and my favorite spot in Rose Hill. I can't read or speak Hebrew but it makes me want to learn. My little girl is very sensitive, she particularly feels for the children's grave. She laid dandelions on the children's graves when she spotted them and would tell me what she thinks they would be doing if they were alive today. So sweet. I recommend it to anyone who has a little extra time for a stroll. There's also flag that you can go towards to get to the soldiers area. It's a nice memorial with some informative plaques. I think there's something for everyone wether your a history buff, photographer or just needing to get in a few extra steps for the day. Family friendly, even my kids love walking around and imagining who the people were or could...
Read moreRose Hill Cemetery is an iconic piece of Georgia history! From Confederate gravesites to the Catholic & Jewish sections of this cemetery to the ever popular Allman Brothers Band members headstones, this place is a must to visit. Their most recent project is identifying the burial sites of Black slaves in the Oak Ridge section. This is an incredible undertaking that requires much research & dedication & is so exciting to see happen.
Wherever I travel, I always visit graveyards b/c I love history; I’m fascinated by the names, nicknames, epitaphs, statuary & often clues about a community/town/city that a graveyard tells. Rose Hill features fabulous walking paths & views across a vast 50+ acre swath of land. The Cemetery Foundation’s commitment to renovation + teaching history PLUS teaching about renovation/preservation is unparalleled. Over the last 10 years, I’ve been here many times & look forward to attending...
Read moreMy grandparents have resided here a good ~30-some odd years. I assume they're content with the digs seeing as we have yet to find them exhumed and chilling in the Ocmulgee.
Aside from the familial ties, it's one of my favorite places in this town to seek solitude, reflect, and ground myself when the world gets too crazy and overstimulating and I just need to get away for a bit without actually "getting away." Aside from that, its location on the banks of the Ocmulgee and its historical significance associated with Macon's rich heritage with music give it a unique edge that you probably wouldn't expect to find in a cemetery in good ol' Macon, Georgia.
Yes, I just described a cemetery as having a...
