Don’t stay here! Most reviews I read before booking Burke Mansion were filled with praise for Jessica, especially her kind and welcoming personality. Now I know why. That’s the only nice thing a reviewer can say. While she is friendly and talkative, there is no substance to anything she says or actually does. She will promise you the sun, moon, and stars when you arrive, but you will receive nothing but the basics. And even they will be sub-par. The front door lock failed to work and we had to call her to get inside with our luggage. The elevator did not work even though it is listed on the website. The handle on our toilet fell off on my husband’s first visit to the bathroom and when we went down for breakfast the next morning at our scheduled time, she was no where to be seen. She showed up about 30 minutes late and said she was “running behind.” The food itself was average – two strips of bacon, a scrambled egg, grits, and a biscuit from a can. Yet we had been promised a southern feast with pastries, made from scratch gravy, etc. We went out for breakfast the next day.
Another problem is the strong-smelling laundry detergent that is used. That plus the over-use of Febreze was stifling. The smell was so strong it caused our pajamas to smell just like it so I packed them separately when we departed so everything else in our suitcase wouldn’t pick up the scent. The towels were worn, and numerous lightbulbs were burned out in our bathroom. The drain cover in the shower was dislodged and no fire extinguisher was visible anywhere in the building. The air-conditioning unit is also freaky and after pulling back the curtains we were appalled at the crude installation. We stayed in the most expensive room at the inn. I can only assume it is rarely booked because it needs a lot of attention.
I have no idea who owns the inn. Jessica’s husband serves as a handyman, her nephew as a bellman (he’s too young to assist with baggage), and her brother-in-law does the yardwork. Her 15-year-old daughter made an appearance wrapped in a blanket (yes you read that right) to refill condiments during breakfast and the daughter’s boyfriend also wandered about. None of them appear to know how to operate a professional business.
Our stay was a big disappointment, and we won’t be back. Other guests felt the same way. The inn’s website does not represent the actual inn! The amenities listed are not offered. Yes, Jessica is sweet, but you can’t get by on sweetness alone. You have to provide a level of service and professionalism that is commensurate with the price you charge. I don’t believe Jessica is up...
Read moreSo Jessica the InnKeeper lives in the back carriage house with her family and sometimes extended family. She could not have been nicer and is trying hard at her new venture. She has help from time to time from her 7 or 10 year old nephew Bentley. And her 14 year old daughter sleeps in one of the vacant rooms - practicing for college when she will have her own apt. While we did not see the kids too much, you can hear them at night enjoying the rooms and playing games or watching TV. Jessica also stays in one of the Burke rooms when vacant as it was on our visit.... She says its her favorite room. The mansion is kinda clean for the most part with the exception of the porch -- see pics - looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years and the ashtrays were a big nasty turn off. Our room was comfortable enough. The shower is slow to drain and you end up staying in dirty water because the drain is very slow to drain. We had a nice widow unit in the room to keep us cool. All the towels and sheets stink of fabric softener or that spray stuff but they were clean. My pajamas still smelled like fabreeze when we got home. Makes me wonder if they were trying to hide smells? We did have to move a sofa cockeyed off the wall into the room so we could access our closet which looked to be half remodeled. This then allowed us to only be able to open the room door part way to squeeze in and out. The breakfast the 1st am was ok - I think they were real eggs - maybe liquid or powdered? The second am we got a microwave sausage biscuit and a bowl of...
Read moreMy friend and I were recently traveling through Georgia and Alabama when we experienced an unexpected issue with our Tesla running out of battery. Stranded and unsure of what to do, we were incredibly fortunate to come across the stunning Burke Mansion in Macon, GA.
Although the Tesla charger on the property is typically reserved for guest use only, Paul, the gracious and kind-hearted General Manager at Burke Mansion, allowed us to use the charger for a few minutes. This simple act of kindness not only saved our day, but it also enabled us to continue our journey with confidence.
Paul's outstanding hospitality and willingness to go the extra mile for two strangers left a lasting impression on us. His warmth and genuine care for people truly embody the spirit of Southern hospitality.
The Burke Mansion itself is a beautiful and well-maintained property, but it's people like Paul who truly make it shine. If you're considering a stay in Macon, look no further than the Burke Mansion for a remarkable experience. We cannot recommend it highly enough!
Thank you, Paul, for turning a challenging situation into a delightful encounter. Your generosity will not be forgotten, and we look forward to visiting again in the...
