We kept reading horrible things about Kahana Falls when booked through RCI. We've driven past the resort many times in years past and wonder how could it be so bad? It looks lovely from the street. Well, I'm here to tell you:||Upon check-in the front desk lady kept referring to "RCI"... "I see you booked with RCI" "since you booked with RCI" etc. To the point one already feels like a second class citizen and we don't even have key cards yet. Finally, with key cards in hand we make 2 lefts as we leave the registration parking area and see our accommodation is an older looking two-story building out back, nothing at all like the two towers you see from the street when passing by. But we came with an open mind, knowing it may be less than stellar based on previous reviews so we venture forth. ||Upon opening the door to our ground floor unit the stench was overwhelming! It's smelled old and musty as well as having a chemical type odor that I don't know what it was and could only speculate, so I won't. We immediately started airing the place out, brought our bags inside and took a good look around. At bedtime the first night we closed the windows and doors so the AC could run more efficiently and I ended up getting a migraine within four hours. The rest of our stay we kept one window open to keep a positive air flow of fresh air, not just the chemical smelling air and I did not have any more migraines. ||Overall, the unit, which is a one bedroom (sleeps 2) with a full kitchen was sufficient in its layout and being decently supplied. But it's old and in desperate need of renovation. The kitchen floor is tile and I'm not sure if there was a single tile in there that was not cracked, broken or had a hole in it. The unit was also very dirty. They want you take your shoes off at the door but oh my word the filth on the floor was unbearable barefoot. I did find the broom, dust pan and mop and put them to good use! But it was appallingly dirty. The living room and bedroom had wood look floors that were equally as dirty as the kitchen and bathroom. ||There is no lanai, or not by my definition. There was a small slab of concrete out back (off of the bedroom via sliding glass doors) with two chairs and a small table. No roof over it. The chairs face out to a retaining wall which essentially holds back the Honoapiilani Hwy. So you have road noise all day and all night. BUT, if you have a second story unit, you have nothing but a window looking out to the highway. Some of "patios" (for lack of a better word) have some vegetation, others do not. ||Back inside, the bathroom is the best part of the entire unit. It HAS been renovated! Nice tile floor, lovely shower, decent storage space with four drawers and a small cabinet space under the sink. ||Front desk: Due to our unhappiness with the unit (smell, uncleanliness, lack of lanai, etc. we went to the reception desk to ask a few questions about the resort. To keep this novel shorter suffice it to say that the woman (different from initial check-in) refused to answer any of our questions saying things like "you'll have to call RCI" in response to "are there 2 bedroom units here at Kahana Falls." Tried to explain that we would attempt to book outside of RCI should we bring our friends on our next trip and she said "I'm not comfortable answering that." Tried to ask about what type of units are in the Hale Kipa building (the two story unit we were housed in) and she responded with "I don't want to be quoted." It was ridiculous and absurd so we left. It was at that moment that, as we walked away, that I determined I'd be writing a review. She was beyond rude and it's clear they'd really rather not deal with you... at least not if you've booked...
Read moreThis resort is a bit of a mixed bag. Of course Maui isn't cheap and price-wise this is likely one of the lower prices available for accommodations. The resort is a bit older but the grounds are unreasonable condition and of course it's Hawaii so the scenery is generally beautiful. This particular resort is located across the street from the beach. There are a few other sister kahana properties nearby.
We had the single bedroom with a full kitchen and a small living room. The room was decent just don't expect anything luxurious. The bedroom was somewhat small indicated by the fact if the closet doors were open you actually couldn't walk past the bed so it is tight for space on both sides. The closet had a safe though for your valuables. Our condo was clean and the room service staff stop by each day around 10:00 to see if we wanted fresh towels. we never had them come in and clean while we were there we just switched out our towels everyday. We stayed in the older two level building toward the back of the property. There were also some towers there as well but we did not stay in those.
One of the disappointing parts I thought was the shower head. It was some cheap old piece of junk showerhead that you would likely see at a pet salon attached to a sink where they wash your dog. The stream was small and weak, it was a spray wand but it was just pathetically weak.
The resort had a decent workout room with dumbbells and a pulley machine for some exercises as well as some cardio machines. It was located upstairs from the office and there was also a big TV room lounge upstairs there as well and kitchen and a game room.
Downstairs below the office there were showers actually available for the day you check out that you can use to shower after you've spent the day at the beach or pool or whatever until you go catch your flight probably later in the evening so I have to say that was convenient.
We never used the pool or the hot tub. We walked by them frequently but to be honest the pool was not very big and I don't think it was very warm at all. There were two hot tubs on property but both of them were quite small and so if another couple or even a small family were in there they were simply too small for anyone else to get in so they were frequently unavailable for use. There were laundry facilities available on site.
As I mentioned earlier in my review I would say this is a reasonable value I guess for what you get. It's more affordable than many places but it's just not luxury at all and if you are fine with that then you'll likely be fine with this resort. You just need to not expect luxury accommodations but you do get a reasonable...
Read moreKahana Falls is an older timeshare property north of Kaanapali (even though the address says Lahaina). We have stayed several times at this property before.
Two main towers are about 6 stories tall. The hotel units are tiny. The studios are also VERY small. We were in a 1 bedroom unit that was spacious and had a washer / dryer, but small water heater (cold bath).
Wall unit A/C in bedroom and living room.
However, in 1 bedroom unit, the lockoff is to a studio size unit. The neighbors decided to turn our power on and off by flipping the circuit breaker one night. That shut off our AC and stove, and we needed maintenance to come by to fix things the next day.
Kahana Falls promised daily housekeeping with towel+trash service in addition to mid-week clean. Housekeeping only came mid-week. We called down after all our towels were left on the floor; they sent up towels 1 night. We kept re-using our towels and took out our own trash, since housekeeping never came again. Then, we were charged $100 Housekeeping fee at checkout. We protested, stating that housekeeping never came for daily service. Management refused to listen. Spoke to higher level mgmt: no results.
Sam (manager), stated that housekeeping comes by at 8 am. If your Do Not Disturb tag is out at 8 am, they skip your housekeeping service. Even when we noted a housekeeping problem during our stay, they did not tell us that we needed to call down every day to request the towel and trash service. We just did without, but were still charged $100 for housekeeping fees at checkout, citing a 'post-clean' fee
We have stayed at this resort before, but the management obviously does not care about guests. They did not provide daily housekeeping services as promised, and blamed us for not calling down every day to request new towels. Then, they insisted on still charging the $100 housekeeping fee. Stubborn, unhelpful management makes this dated resort questionable in their hospitality practices. They actually wanted a poor report card from RCI, and left guests with a very bad impression of their resort.
The small pool is heated and quaint with waterfall. Sandy bottom in the hot tub.
Questionable hospitality and management services. Conditions have deteriorated at this...
